Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Researcher - Nuclear Physics in Lemont, Illinois
Argonne National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory located near Chicago, Illinois, has an opening for a Postdoctoral Appointee. The Packaging Certification and Life Cycle Management (PCLCM) Program in the Decision and Infrastructure Sciences Division (DIS) of Argonne National Laboratory solicits applicants to fill a research and development postdoc position in the area of nuclear physics supporting programs in nuclear science and technologies. The successful candidate will perform basic and applied research and development including, but not limited to, muon radiography (muography) for monitoring facilities of nuclear fuel cycle materials, microreactors and transport conveyances. We are looking for a motivated, recently graduated candidate with expertise in theoretical nuclear physics, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and experience with muography to join our team at Argonne.
Argonne has a broad research program in QCD/hadron physics and nuclear structure/ reactions, and access to extensive laboratory and national computational resources. In addition, we have significant involvement in three SciDAC-5 projects: 1) Femtoscale Imaging of Nuclei using Exascale Platforms, 2) Fundamental nuclear physics at the exascale and beyond, and 3) Nuclear Computational Low Energy Initiative (NUCLEI); and two Topical Collaborations: 1) 3D quark-gluon structure of hadrons: mass, spin, and tomography, and 2) Nuclear Theory for New Physics.
Position Requirements
This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in Physics, Materials Science, or a related field at the PhD level with zero to five years of employment experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
Theoretical nuclear physics, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and experience with muography
High level of scientific creativity and a strong aptitude for problem-solving
Self-starter that can carry out tasks with minimal oversight
Familiar with computer languages: C, C++, Python, Matlab, CSS, HTML
Effective written and oral communication skills
Experience in using AI/ML frameworks and GPU processing for ML
Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
