Town of Leland Grounds Maintenance Technician in Leland, North Carolina

Performs basic skilled work in ground maintenance at Town of Leland properties, parks, recreation areas, and Right of Ways. Hand tools, lawn mowers, and light to medium duty construction equipment are used in this position. This position is designated as essential during emergency or disaster situations. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Grounds Maintenance Crew Chief or Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs a variety of tasks in grounds maintenance of parks, recreation, and other public areas, included but not limited to sowing, over seeding, sodding grassed areas, plants shrubs, trim, prune trees, and shrubs, mows grass in the parks, right of ways, and other Town properties.
  • Collects and disposes vegetative debris.
  • Operates all types of mowers, tractors, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, and various other hand held power equipment.
  • Plants flowers, shrubs, and other vegetation as well as maintains planting beds and other natural areas.
  • Repairs or installs hardscapes such as rocks, brick, pavers and or concrete.
  • Edges sidewalks and curbs, weed eats, pulls weeds, trims trees and shrubs; uses blowers to clear paths and parking lots.
  • Removes trash and other waste from Town properties and right of ways.
  • Uses handheld equipment such as rakes, shovels, tamps, and axes.
  • Installs, inspects, and repairs irrigation systems to ensure proper operation.
  • Assists in setting up for events; repairs decks and playground equipment; performs related landscaping duties in the maintenance of parks.
  • Performs minor repair and preventative maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment; performs oil changes, replaces filters and spark plugs, checks tire pressure and fluids.
  • Assists Facilities Maintenance and Streets staff as needed or requested.
  • Performs work during emergency or disaster situations upon request and as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimal (less than one year) of experience.
  • Some knowledge of operation of mowers, tractors, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, and various other handheld power equipment preferred.
  • Possession of Flagger Certification within 1 year of appointment.
  • Possession of FEMA Class 100 and 700 Certifications within 1 year of appointment.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of grounds, landscape, and related maintenance, and procedures.
  • Some knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
  • Some knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to read and write basic instructions and work orders.
  • Ability to perform work during emergency or disaster situations upon request and as assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing and walking, frequently requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Salary Description $44,000.00 - $50,600.00
