Vanderbilt University Community Service Officer III - Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital in Lebanon, Tennessee

The Community Service Officer III (CSO III) role is part of the Vanderbilt University Public Safety Department assigned to the new Safety and Security Program at the Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital. This role will supervise staff and promote a safe and secure environment for the Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital Community.

This is an unarmed position. Pay rate: $22.00 per hour plus shift differential up to $1.75 per hour for 2nd and 3rd shifts.

About the Work Unit:

Vanderbilt University Public Safety comes under the charge of the Office of the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor/Chief of Police for the Division of Administration. The Public Safety Department includes a staff of over 300 people. The department is organized into four Divisions: Administration, Operations, General Services, and Emergency Management. The Department employs commissioned officers, non-academy-trained officers for security-related functions, and administrative personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

Community Service Officer III

  • Provide relief to assigned CSO posts as assigned.

  • Conduct individual building security checks and directed patrols when tasked.

  • Assist with emergency response to fire/medical as needed.

  • Conduct bi-weekly Emergency Phone Test for zone.

  • Conduct Vehicle Access, Jump Starts or assist motorist calls within patrol zone.

  • Complete all associated reports and paperwork documenting request for service during shift.

  • Serves as a backup to CSO I and CSO II positions as needed.

  • Responsible for assigning areas and duties of the CSO I’s and CSO II’s to maintain the orderly flow of the Vanderbilt Wilson County community.

  • Reviews and approves timesheets for the assigned CSO I’s and CSO II’s as needed.

  • Visible patrol in and around, common areas, zone buildings, parking lots and garages.

  • Provide walking or driving escorts when tasked.

  • Report and document damage to sidewalks and outages of sidewalk lights and street lighting to Communications for repairs.

  • Send reminder communications to CSO I’s and CSO II’s as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.

  • 18 years of age is required.

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

  • Vanderbilt University engages a third party to provide continuous up-to-date notifications regarding negative changes to motor vehicle records.

  • Completion of VUPS training within 30 days of hire is required. This includes:

  • De-escalation, Pressure Point Control Tactics, ASP Baton, pepper spray, or similar training

  • CPR and AED certification

  • Private Protective Services Act certification

  • Security Officer training

  • 12 months of experience working in safety/security or law enforcement is required.

  • Prior experience as a supervisor is preferred.

  • Excellent customer service skills is required.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills are necessary.

  • Experience working with MS Word Excel, and other computer programs is preferred.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize assignments and tasks is necessary.

  • Ability to function in a multi-tasking environment is necessary.

  • Ability to operate computerized equipment and a two-way radio is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve is required.

  • Prior experience as a supervisor is preferred.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills is required.

Physical Requirements:

Community Service Officers III must be able to:

  • Stand for long periods of time.

  • Walk, climb, and lift.

  • Meet written department standards on appearance/grooming.

  • Pass a thorough background investigation.

  • Must obtain immunizations and medical tests as required to be able to work in patient care and high-risk areas.

Working Environment:

  • Required to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned.

  • Must be able to work in inclement weather and various weather extremes.

  • May encounter such things as hazardous materials, infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, steam, car battery acid, loud noises, smoke, and fire.

  • Must correctly use a TB Mask and other precautionary equipment.

  • May encounter physical danger from violent patients, suspects, and others.
