GCW, Inc. GIS Analyst (Geographic Information Systems Analyst) in Las Vegas, Nevada

Under general supervision, performs a variety of complex professional duties in supporting the development and administration of geo-data and geographic information systems capabilities; utilizes GIS tools and utilities to develop custom maps, data displays, reports, analyses and other products; and performs related duties as assigned.

This position performs a variety of complex professional GIS assignments in developing and maintaining GIS databases and providing analytical support for water research, water acquisition, groundwater modeling, well management, environmental impact analyses, facilities expansion and/or land use requirements throughout the organization. Incumbents apply GIS theories, principles, software and data to produce custom and standard maps, data displays and other products to meet client requirements. Incumbents design, develop and maintain specialized data sets and layers within the corporate GIS database or in separate databases to support these functions.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Designs, develops, generates and administers data sets and data layers for research and analysis
  • Performs database administration and quality assurance assignments
  • Writes scripts and queries to identify database discrepancies, automate corrections where possible and identify database quality improvement requirements
  • Ensures the overall accuracy and reliability of data and GIS products and services in accordance with established standards
  • Develops and implements custom GIS applications, scripts and tools to ensure query capabilities and data manipulation access to GIS database layers
  • Develops tools to automate input processes and perform a variety of data editing
  • Uses GIS and other tools to integrate specialized departmental and corporate GIS data for a variety of purposes; identifies anomalies in existing data sources and implements actions for their resolution
  • Meets with clients to determine their data requirements and data communications challenges
  • Uses GIS and other related software, tools and utilities in conjunction with relational database systems to develop and produce a variety of products and services to support departmental operations and research requirements
  • Compiles data to display complex ideas in a concise graphic format; performs complex spatial analyses to model theories, prove engineering concepts and investigate complex, interrelated issues
  • Compiles and integrates data from a variety of sources, including aerial photos and remote sensing data, and converts non-GIS data formats into usable GIS data to provide support for terrain, topographic, hydrologic, hydrogeologic and time-sequenced event analyses, including what if scenarios and three-dimensional modeling
  • Designs and develops a wide variety of custom maps to meet specific client requirements; develops and produces standard maps for specific purposes; integrates GIS and imagery data to depict interrelationships and provide support for scientific and environmental impact analyses

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Geographic information system concepts, principles, development tools and analytical techniques, including computerized mapping and attribute-data conversion, manipulation and analysis
  • Applicable programming languages and tools
  • Relational database systems including architectures, design and development principles and administration tools
  • Principles, practices and techniques of mapping and computer-aided design and drafting
  • Civil engineering design concepts, methods and terminology applicable to the display of spatial relationships of facilities data; advanced analytical techniques using computer science and GIS technology
  • GPS system concepts and analytical techniques systems analysis methods and t chniques applicable to GIS applications development; structure and operations of AutoDesk Map and AutoCAD systems and applications

Ability to:

  • Plan, organize and complete relational database projects efficiently to meet user needs in a timely manner
  • Identify engineering-related geo-data and information management issues and opportunities, analyze problems and alternatives and develop sound conclusions and recommendations
  • Assess GIS user needs; set priorities and carry out assigned projects to most effectively meet needs in a timely manner; use AutoDesk Map, AutoCAD, ESRI ArcGIS, ESRI ArcSDE, or equivalent software as required in carrying out GIS assignments
  • Develop and implement appropriate procedures and prepare accurate GIS products and services
  • Prepare clear, concise and accurate documentation, project reports and other written materials
  • Exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, co-workers, representatives of other departments and divisions, professionals in other public agencies and others encountered in the course of work

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in GIS, civil engineering, computer science or a related field; and
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the implementation and administration of geographical information systems; or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid driver's license.
