What You Will Do

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division is looking for an exceptional Explosives Experiment Fielding Engineer to join our Nevada Operations Group (J-NV). The Fielding Engineer will report to the Nevada Operations Group Leader within the Integrated Weapons Experiments Division. The Group is the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) on-site organization responsible for preparation, fielding, and execution of dynamic high explosive related experiments at outdoor firing sites and sub-critical dynamic experiments at the PULSE underground complex involving special nuclear material for the LANL Weapons program as well as other national security customers.

This engineer will lead testbed layout design and construction as well as the design, testing, and fielding of load-bearing test equipment. They will work with customers to help define experimental requirements, develop and maintain schedules and budgets for a given project, present project updates to customers and LANL management, coordinate support with the NNSS M&O contactor, and be the engineer in the field directing all levels of workers.

This position will require occasional travel and requires the candidate to obtain and maintain a Q-clearance as well as participation in LANL's Human Reliability Program certification.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Expertise

Demonstrated engineering concepts and practices, as well as analytical thinking skills, as demonstrated by experience designing and fielding layouts and hardware for experiments or other construction-type projects. Ability to design hardware to meet project-specific needs and draft engineering drawings for fabrication. Experience with or exposure to a broad range of engineering work, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or construction/civil engineering. Familiar with solid-modeling tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo.

Organizational Skills

Demonstrated record of successfully working alone with ability to set direction and goals for assigned tasks and manage his/her own assignments without requiring specific directions. Demonstrated ability to identify subject matter experts to help solve technical problems.Demonstrated ability to work on multiple tasks for competing projects, including definition and coordination of required resources.

Communication and Teamwork

Ability to work in physically demanding, extreme weather, high-paced environments independently or with coworkers representing a variety of technical backgrounds and external support organizations. Ability to express ideas clearly to coworkers, customers, and management. Demonstrates eagerness to ask questions and learn new skills outside of his/her focused discipline.

Field Experience

Experience working with load-bearing equipment, such as hoisting and rigging equipment, test stands, and working platforms. Experience performing crane operations or writing lift plans. Experience directing workers to construct test layouts or other construction-type activities. Ability to think ahead and mitigate potential technical or schedule issues.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

• Ability to perform engineering analysis, such as lift plan calculations or finite element analysis of test fixtures or hoisting and rigging hardware.

• Experience operating or directing work with heavy machinery.

• Familiar with DOE-STD-1212 Explosives Safety, DOE-STD-1090 Hoisting and Rigging Standard, or similar explosives safety or hoisting and rigging regulations.

• Active Q Clearance.

Work Location:

This position is located at the Nevada National Security Site and requires living in the Las Vegas, Nevada area .

• Located This position is located at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and is located about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NV. Employees can take a commuter bus, carpool, or drive to work locations. Once at the work location, experiment sites can be an additional 30 to 50 miles. Employees must factor in an extra 1 to 1 ½ hours commute each way to the 10-hour workday (employees work a 4-day/10- hour day schedule).

• Work at the NNSS usually results in long days that start at sunup and end late in the day. Work locations can be 1000 feet underground or in the middle of the desert. Temperatures can vary from below freezing to above 100 degrees.

• This position requires periodic travel from Las Vegas, NV to Los Alamos, NM for training and project-specific requirements.

Position commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
