Summary What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Salary: WG-05: $25.96 (Step 01) to $30.32 (Step 05) NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Responsibilities As a Drill Rig Operator Helper within the Research Drilling Program, some of your specific duties will include: Assists drill rig operators in the operation of a truck mounted top-head drive drill rigs for the purpose of obtaining a variety of subsurface data as related to ongoing scientific investigations. Assists Drill Rig Operator in the operation, maintenance, and repair of drilling rigs, water trucks, trailers, compressors, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment. Responsible for working well within a unit, able to follow directions as given. Additional Requirements of the Job: Must operate a government vehicle as an incidental driver. Work days are typically 12 hour shifts in strenuous conditions and extreme weather. Lifting objects up to 100 lbs will be required. Climbing and working at heights 30' to 40' feet above ground will be required. Physical Effort: Strenuous effort is required in manipulating and maintaining equipment. Extreme physical exertion is occasionally demanded to effectively carry out all functions of the job. Work includes twisting two-hundred pound drill rods in and out of the drill hole for extended periods, shoveling dirt or mud from the immediate drilling area, and moving heavy and awkward equipment in the drilling area. These objects frequently weigh up to 150 lbs. Physical strength, endurance, and dexterity of all limbs is required. Working Conditions: Work on sites requires the wearing of protective gear against possible exposure to chemical hazards. Use of specified personal protective equipment is mandatory. Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period. Must have and maintain a current driver's license. Selectee subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical exam and Drug Test. Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position? Drug Test & Pre-Employment Medical - Prior to appointment, the selectee is required to take and pass, at Federal expense: (1) a physical exam; and (2) a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use. From thereon, the incumbent may be subject to random drug testing. You will operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle as part of your official duties. Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued. A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Screen-Out Element: Without more than normal supervision, applicants must be able to perform Drill Rig Operator Helper task/duties: Assist the Drill Rig Operator with setting up drill rig equipment, operate truck mounted top-head drive drill rig. Operate and perform basic maintenance/repair of drill rigs, water trucks, trailers, compressors, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment. These and similar tasks must be accomplished without more than normal supervision.
