Salary: WG-05: $25.96 (Step 01) to $30.32 (Step 05) NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Responsibilities As a Drill Rig Operator Helper within the Research Drilling Program, some of your specific duties will include: Assists drill rig operators in the operation of a truck mounted top-head drive drill rigs for the purpose of obtaining a variety of subsurface data as related to ongoing scientific investigations. Assists Drill Rig Operator in the operation, maintenance, and repair of drilling rigs, water trucks, trailers, compressors, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment. Responsible for working well within a unit, able to follow directions as given. Additional Requirements of the Job: Must operate a government vehicle as an incidental driver. Work days are typically 12 hour shifts in strenuous conditions and extreme weather. Lifting objects up to 100 lbs will be required. Climbing and working at heights 30' to 40' feet above ground will be required. Physical Effort: Strenuous effort is required in manipulating and maintaining equipment. Extreme physical exertion is occasionally demanded to effectively carry out all functions of the job. Work includes twisting two-hundred pound drill rods in and out of the drill hole for extended periods, shoveling dirt or mud from the immediate drilling area, and moving heavy and awkward equipment in the drilling area. These objects frequently weigh up to 150 lbs. Physical strength, endurance, and dexterity of all limbs is required. Working Conditions: Work on sites requires the wearing of protective gear against possible exposure to chemical hazards. Use of specified personal protective equipment is mandatory.
