Description

Overview: The Assistant Audio Engineer plays a crucial role in both the audio and backstage operations of a live production. This position involves managing wireless microphones, running a deck track, overseeing crew communication packs, and ensuring that all audio and stage elements operate smoothly during performances. The Assistant Audio Engineer works closely with the A1, deck crew, and other production members to deliver a seamless experience for the audience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handle the setup, distribution, and maintenance of wireless microphones, ensuring that all performers are properly miked and that equipment is functioning correctly.

  • Assist the A1 with pre-show sound checks, testing all microphones, monitors, and other audio equipment to ensure optimal performance.

  • Monitor and troubleshoot audio issues during the show, such as signal drops or interference, to maintain consistent sound quality. Provide on-the-spot adjustments as needed.

  • Run a designated deck track, which includes assisting with set changes, managing props, and coordinating backstage movements in sync with the show’s cues.

  • Must be able to; lift, pull, and push items over 40 lbs regularly, stand for long periods of time, moving quickly in dark spaces, exposure to lighting that may have a strobe effect, and breathing air with haze or fog effects present.

  • Oversee the distribution, setup, and operation of communication packs for the crew, ensuring clear and reliable communication throughout the show. Perform routine checks and maintenance on comm packs to avoid technical issues.

  • Maintain clear communication with the A1, deck crew, and other team members to coordinate stage transitions and troubleshoot any issues during the performance.

  • Assist with the setup and breakdown of audio equipment, including microphones, monitors, and other sound systems. Ensure all equipment is safely stored and maintained.

  • Monitor and manage battery levels for all wireless microphones and comm packs, ensuring that fresh batteries are installed before each performance.

  • Attend rehearsals to familiarize yourself with the show’s audio and stage requirements, practicing both audio management and deck track operations to ensure smooth execution during live shows.

  • Perform routine maintenance on audio equipment, comm packs, and troubleshoot any technical issues that occur during setup, rehearsals, or performances.

  • Adhere to all safety protocols related to the handling and operation of audio equipment, communication systems, and backstage elements, ensuring a safe environment for performers and crew members.

    Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Experience working as an A2, audio technician, or in a similar role within live entertainment.

  • Strong understanding of audio equipment, particularly wireless microphone systems and live sound mixing.

  • Experience with stagehand duties, including set changes, prop management, and running deck tracks, is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with communication systems and their operation in a live show environment.

  • Ability to work under pressure and respond quickly to technical and stage-related issues during a live show.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to take direction and work collaboratively.

  • Physical capability to handle and transport audio and stage equipment, including the ability to work in confined or elevated spaces.

  • Familiarity with OSHA safety regulations (OSHA 10 certification required).

  • First Aid certification is a plus.

  • A passion for live entertainment is a plus.
