Nature of Work

Coordinates, and oversees crews performing the location, identification, and marking of gas mains and customer service lines. Participates in the work of the vactor truck crew engaged in locating untraceable underground utility service and main lines for the Utilities Department.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Position works the majority of time outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, mechanical hazards, blowing gas, traffic hazards, fumes, and dust; occasional exposure to explosives and burns during emergency situations. Protective clothing includes safety helmet with face shield, fire retardant coveralls, eye wear, steel toe boots, vests and breathing apparatus.

PHYSICAL FACTORS

Heavy physical work involving bending, stooping, kneeling and crouching; lifting and carrying items weighing up to 100 pounds; visual acuity and auditory ability sufficient to perform job functions; ability to move about uneven ground surfaces; ability to work in confined spaces, wear and use SCBA, and pass annual confined space physical.

WORK SITUATION FACTORS

Competing demands may require stand-by duties, responding to emergency needs, irregular shifts as assigned, extended work beyond an eight-hour shift, and weekend work. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policy.

Duties and Responsibilities

Schedules, assigns, and oversees daily activities of the vactor truck crew; inspects completed work ensuring it remains compliant with standards and safety requirements, provides on-the-job training to new employees, and instructs crew on proper work procedures.

Researches as-builts, maps, and line cards; determines if gas lines are live or abandoned through research as well as manually checking the lines; performs GPS functions on gas lines the crew is unable to locate.

Operates and uses vactor truck and backhoe to locate and repair gas line, fuses poly pipe, glues PVC and ABS pipe, and primes and apes steel gas lines.

Utilizes and employs various testing equipment, gas leak detection equipment, and pipe locating equipment; uses appropriate safety equipment and follows safety procedures.

Operates and performs preventive maintenance on light equipment; performs work on trucks, backhoes, trenchers, tampers, and jackhammers.

Responds to inquiries and complaints from City staff and the public; maintains nec ssary DOT documentation, daily logbooks, and records.

Reviews, maintains, and updates records in various formats, mediums, and automated systems to ensure data integrity and adherence to internal controls, practices, and policies; demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless services.

Provides performance feedback, trains, and instructs employees to meet established goals and objectives; participates in staff evaluations
