Job Description

PURPOSE SUMMARY - Responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and support of the server, network, storage, and backup infrastructure. Provides project leadership and consultation for complex technical problems. Ensures that all IT systems are secure and compliant.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Provide effective, reliable and secure network and systems services to the County.

  1. Lead implementation of complex network and server systems involving multiple groups, departments, and/or vendors.
  • Install, configure, and maintain servers, network devices, virtual server environment and related software.

  • Troubleshoots network and server problems at all levels of the system including physical wiring, hardware, or software failure and communications protocol problems; takes appropriate action to resolve such problems.

  1. Design, implement, monitor, troubleshoot and optimize performance of County storage.
  • Manage Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) systems, including supporting ISCSI, NFS, LUN creation/modification, CIFS shares and data deduplication.

  • Perform regular backups of all enterprise storage systems, network shares and other server systems.

  • Ensure that all data is properly protected and perform restores as necessary.

  1. System performance monitoring and capacity planning.
  • Monitor and manage server and network system performance for problems.

  • Provide technical support functions and activities of the work unit.

  • Perform capacity planning for servers and storage systems. Determine need and schedule for maintenance, upgrades, and equipment refresh. Communicate with the IT Infrastructure Manager on findings and make recommendations.

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize performance of Windows and Linux operating systems across a wide variety of applications.

  1. Standard operating procedures (SOPs) and documentation.
  • Evaluate and recommend new administration tools, products, and procedures.

  • Create and update documentation for servers, networks, storage, and backup environments and ensure audit compliance.

  • Provide regular monthly reports of all storage and backup systems performance and utilization.

  • Stay up to date on the latest IT trends, technologies, and industry best practices.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES - Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist in the design of network topologies.

  • Assist with Disaster Recovery planning and testing.

  • Perform 24-hour on-call duty as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education - Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Computer Science or related field.

B. Experience - Four (4) years related experience.

C. Education/Experience substitution - In accordance with County policy.

D. Licenses/Certifications. Valid driver's License. Must maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with County Policy. Comptia or Cisco certification(s) preferred.

E. Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver's license record, etc.). Must successfully pass NCIC check, background check, and driver's license record check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Knowledge of:

Principles and techniques of network and systems maintenance, including data communications systems, server hardware and software, local area networks, wide area networks, hardware maintenance, document imaging systems, network printers and Microsoft Active Directory.

Extensive knowledge of Windows, Linux, or other operating systems.

Strong understanding of security principles and practices.

Proficiency in networking protocols, TCP/IP, and network security concepts.

Experience with backup and recovery software, virtualization technologies, and cloud computing.

Ability to:

Lead systems analysis and design to develo logical solutions to complex problems.

Adaptability and a willingness to learn new technologies and methodologies.

Accurately identify and evaluate software needs and requirements.

Write clear technical documentation.

Work independently and as part of a team.

Manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.

Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships to collaborate with colleagues and end-users.

Skilled in:

Windows Server, Linux, and networking technologies.

Virtualization technologies such as VMware and Hyper-V.

Installation, maintenance and repair of server and network systems.

Methods of effective project planning, leadership, and management.

Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.

Strong communication, in oral and written form.
