Nature of Work

Performs general labor services to ensure the efficient upkeep and service of assigned grounds, facilities, and bus shelters and cleanliness of transit fleet vehicles.

Environmental Factors:

Work is performed primarily outdoors with travel to other locations and facilities with exposure to all weather and traffic conditions; frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, fluids, and contaminants, dirt, dust, fumes, noise, and vibration of electrical/mechanical equipment. Protective clothing and equipment is available and required.

Physical Factors:

Heavy physical work involving standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, climbing, crouching, kneeling, squatting, pushing and pulling, and reaching from all levels; ability to lift and carry and push and pull items weighing up to one-hundred (100) pounds; sufficient communication capabilities, powers of observation, manual dexterity, tactile senses, and mobility and physical reflexes necessary to effectively and safely perform the essential job functions.

Work Situation Factors:

Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, work beyond normal business hours to include weekends and holidays, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

This recruitment will used to fill multiple vacancies to include positions that are regular or contract and may be full-time, part-time or temporary.

This position is graded BC04.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs cleaning duties on vehicles, facilities, and bus stop amenities to ensure the upkeep, neatness, and sanitation of various assigned facilities, passenger waiting areas, and other equipment and materials serving the community.

  • Uses and institutes the appropriate protective equipment and various cleaning supplies and chemicals to clean, sanitize, and deodorize facilities, vehicles, and passenger waiting areas.

  • Services, cleans, inspects, and performs general maintenance of bus shelters, bus stops, and passenger waiting areas; assists the building maintenance staff with all custodial activities and the maintenance of transit facilities.

  • Creates and updates information in various mediums and formats; performs data entry and records management related to the services and functions assigned; prepares various special and recurring reports, forms, and other documents to provide accurate and timely information.

  • Responds to service calls for the repair and maintenance of assigned structures or facilities; may assist with minor vehicle repairs, transportation of tools and equipment, and delivery of fuel to vehicles or equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

No specific educational requirement. Six (6) months of custodial experience to include minor facility, or grounds, maintenance, repair, and upkeep. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.

Licenses/Certifications:

A valid driver's license may be required or preferred. If applicable, position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of: principles, practices, techniques, and procedures used to effectively perform custodial work, general maintenance, and upkeep of grounds and facilities; safe and effective use of related chemicals, supplies, materials, tools, and equipment; related occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, environmental and safety regulations, procedures, and practices; principles, techniques, and practices of effective and respectful customer service; principles of record keeping and records management; business and personal computers and related software applications; City organization, operations, policies and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.

Ability to: perform a variety of duties and responsibilities timely, safely, and with accuracy to meet deadlines and to ensure achievement of goals and objectives; adhere to all applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures related to the functions of the position and department; use appropriate safety equipment and follow safety procedures; safely operate associated tools, equipment, and motor vehicles; detect and assist with needed repairs and make necessary operational adjustments on equipment; navigate across even and uneven surfaces; follow established procedures, and oral and written instructions; read, understand, and comply with a variety of specifications, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations governing related activities and functions; use sound judgment in decision-making with routine operations; communicate appropriately and effectively orally and in writing; compile applicable information, maintain accurate records, review documents and extract relevant information; establish and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with employees and the public; use initiative and independent judgment within existing procedural guidelines to successfully meet established goals and objectives.

Skills in: efficient and effective use of related equipment, tools, and techniques required to successfully perform the functions of the position; maintaining complete and accurate records; performing related reading, writing, and mathematical calculations; using independent judgment and personal initiative; operating a personal computer with installed generic and specialized software; assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, priorities, and demands.
