University Of Michigan Health Sparrow MEDICAL ASSISTANT APPRENTICE in Lansing, Michigan

The Medical Assistant (MA) Apprenticeship will utilize a program of virtual classroom and clinical practice learning to prepare medical assistants for employment. In partnership with Lansing Community College and Capital Area Michigan Works!, students will attend a rotation of classes and clinical practicum 5 days a week for a duration of 24 weeks.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Attend virtual classroom and practicum for entire duration of the 24 week program.
  • Follow curriculum and course outlines, including attendance policy outlined by Lansing Community College.
  • Skills to be gained during practicum include but are not limited to: measurement and recording of vitals, EKG, venipuncture, capillary puncture, pulmonary function testing, medication administration, first aid procedures, prepare and perform procedure treatments, infection control, nutrition, communication, insurance practices, and many more.
  • Performs point of care testing.
  • Answers, screens and triages telephone calls. Takes accurate messages and distributes to the appropriate personnel within the guidelines of the practice.
  • Schedules tests and referral appointments for patients.
  • Phones and electronically submit prescriptions to pharmacies.
  • Engages and helps promote patient/family teaching as appropriate; and provides an educational environment for patients and families.
  • Maintains practice standards by participating in in-services, meetings, etc. May assist in developing and implementing quality control and practice policies.
  • Inventories, orders and restocks areas as necessary.
  • Maintains and cleans equipment and exam rooms. Maintains environmental safety as required.
  • Provides clerical services as required to maintain an effective practice flow- including but not limited to scheduling, patient reminders, clinic mailings, etc.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and maintains and respects patient right to privacy by following the HIPAA Privacy and Security policies and procedures.
