The Lansing Board of Water & Light has an opening for an *Asset Accountant III, *located in Lansing, MI.

  Job Type: Full-Time Starting Salary Range: $74,367?. - $89,278.

 

*Position Summary: *

The Asset Accountant is responsible for identification, recording, valuation, accounting, reporting and timely capitalization of capital projects, and the reconciliation and reporting of capital work in progress.  Ensures compliance with industry standards and requirements of FERC, NARUC, GASB, FASB and BWL policies and procedures. Maintains the perpetual inventories of BWL plant, property and equipment and records depreciation. Responsible for the training and oversight of the Asset Accountant II and Interns.  Liaison with Project Engineering.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and plant accounting practices are carried out in accordance with established cost accounting principles, industry, and regulatory standards, and BWL policies and procedures.
  • Maintains and ensures the integrity of the data in the WBS and the accounting system by auditing transactions recorded.
  • Ensures proper identification, account coding and unitization, budget assignment, and proper approvals are secured.
  • Organizes and leads meetings with project managers to resolve project issues through use of BWL policies and knowledge of plant procedures.
  • Processes additions, transfers, and disposals of plant assets for all BWL locations according to FERC, NARUC, GASB, and FASB guidelines and BWL policies and procedures.
  • Performs month-end and year-end closings for WBSs, plant assets and accumulated depreciation.
  • Responsible for reconciliation of WBSs, plant assets, and accumulated depreciation subsidiary ledgers to the general ledger, on a monthly and annual basis.
  • Prepares audit schedules related to property, plant, and equipment, and assists with auditor inquiries.
  • Collaborates with department and business owners on a variety of strategic and functional projects and activities.
  • Leads and directs the work for the Asset Accountant II and Interns and reviews work performed for proper adherence to established policies and procedures.
  • Answers questions and guides BWL staff regarding asset accounting through use of BWL policies and knowledge of specific procedures to resolve problems.
  • Provides training to new BWL staff regarding BWL's Fixed Asset Recordation processes.
  • Is the liaison to Project Engineering staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of Handy-Whitman Index and its application to asset insurable values.
  • Reviews current policies and procedures and recommends and implements approved changes.
  • Calculates asset retirement obligations for those fixed assets to which AROs are applicable.
  • Investigates the potential obsolescence of fixed assets.
  • Conducts periodic impairment reviews for intangible assets.
  • Recommends to management whether fixed assets should be disposed of.
  • Conducts analyses related to fixed assets as requested by management.
  • Analyzes multi-source data and create spreadsheet applications for ad hoc financial reporting.
  • Continuously seeks out ways to streamline processes related to the recordation of fixed assets.
  • Works beyond normal business hours as deadlines warrant.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
