Job Title: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Clinical Operator

1.0 FTE, Full time, 40 hrs/week, 1st shift. 8AM - 4:30PM, No weekends, holidays or on call.

POSITION SUMMARY:

To ensure success, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) technicians is responsible for administering TMS treatments as prescribed, and assisting patients to complete psychiatric rating scales after sessions. To ensure success, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) technicians should possess detailed knowledge of TMS treatment, or receive detailed training upon hire. Facilitate special projects as defined and directed by the Executive Director of Behavioral Health Service Line, and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, working professionally with other identified key stakeholders and team members.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • Provides patients with education and information (via phone or mail) about the TMS therapy.

  • Positions the patient appropriately in the TMS device prior to initiation of the TMS treatment.

  • Operates the computer software associated with the TMS device and operates other computer programs utilized to support the TMS therapy clinical care and services.

  • Administers TMS treatment sessions, under the supervision and guidance of the LGH TMS Psychiatric Physician, by following the established parameters set by the LGH TMS Psychiatric Physician.

  • Completes a pre and post session screen and general clinical condition before and after the patient receives TMS treatments.

  • Monitors the patient during the TMS therapy session. The TMS Clinical Operator must remain in the room and observe the patient’s physical status for potential adverse incidents throughout the entire TMS treatment session. See definition of an adverse incident listed above. Report any adverse incident through the

  • Contacts the Penn Medicine/Lancaster General Health (LGH) TMS Psychiatric Physician onsite, providing direct supervision for feedback and instructions, to address any questions or concerns raised by the patient in the clinical assessment prior to starting TMS treatment.

  • Makes routine TMS adjustments to the device as required and consistent with the manufacturer labeling recommendations and proper use (example: ensure there is contact between patients head and the treatment coil) during the TMS treatment session.

  • The TMS Operator will follow the pre-determined stimulation dose or treatment coil position parameters prescribed by the LGH TMS Psychiatric Physician. The TMS operator will not independently adjust the parameters set by the LGH TMS Psychiatric Physician.

  • Provides the LGH TMS Psychiatric Physician with the daily report of the patient clinical status (including overall progress, side effects, medication changes, or other new clinical data) for each patient receiving TMS therapy during the day.

  • Administers and Collects a self-report assessment form.

  • The TMS Clinical Operator can interrupt treatment or terminate treatment (example: patient expresses urgency to move position) and can stop or pause TMS therapy treatments as indicated by the LGH TMS Psychiatric Physician.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:

  • Maintain functional cross-competencies.

  • Exhibits ownership and accountability for special projects, as approved and assigned. Develops a realistic timeline, communicates project status to Executive Director and Chair on a regular and timely basis and ensures adherence to deliverables.

  • Promotes team building for project teams. Engages project team members professionally, respectfully, and collegially. Works with various departments within the entire health system to ensure each approved project’s successful completion.

  • Maintains strong project leadership skills. Stays current on best technology, best project leader skills, processes and implementation methods.

  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma.

  • Two (2) years experience as a direct care provider in healthcare (examples: Patient Care Assistant, entry-level healthcare role).

  • Demonstrated collegial and professional collaboration with clinical providers and administration.

  • Highly computer proficient.

  • Ability to simultaneously manage projects and multiple priorities successfully.

  • Ability to negotiate, interact professionally with both internal and external stakeholders, be accountable to project deadlines and financial budgets.

  • If applicable, a health care provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs, i.e. not excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid or any other federal or state health insurance program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates degree in Human Service or related field.

  • Three (3) years of related work experience.

  • Prior Psychiatric Utilization Review experience strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of the medical insurance industry, psychiatric clinical concepts, modern psychiatric treatment planning and insurance preauthorization requirements, specifically pertaining to mental health and substance abuse coverage.
