LOCATION: Lancaster, PA - Lancaster General Hospital

HOURS : Full Time (40 hours per week). Monday-Friday (8am-4pm). No weekends or holidays. Rotating on-call requirements (answering pages from home).

POSITION SUMMARY: This position assumes responsibility and accountability for patient infection control surveillance. Patient care includes care to patients in the following age groups: Patient care includes care to patients in the following age groups: neonatal (birth to 30 days), pediatric (30 days through 12 years), adolescent (13 through 18 years), adult (19 through 64 years), and geriatric (65 years and above).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • Plans and implements the day-to-day infection surveillance activity of all departments and services that provide direct patient care or provide the support of patient care.

  • Collaborates with the Employee Health Nurse in the surveillance of infections among hospital personnel.

  • Assists the Supervisor, Infection Prevention in identifying, monitoring and controlling outbreaks of nosocomial infection among patient and hospital personnel.

  • Works with an electronic surveillance system to collect data.

  • Assesses and evaluates infection data with the Supervisor, Infection Prevention to distinguish between nosocomial and community-acquired infection.

  • Submits surveillance data so that the monthly Healthcare Associated Infection Report is complete.

  • Identifies potential sources of nosocomial infection and implements actions to eliminate the source.

  • Acts as a consultant to nursing units and other departments in implementing isolation techniques or other infection control and prevention measures.

  • Communicates and collaborates with the Laboratory in order to identify significant laboratory information.

  • Communicates with the State Health Department in reporting diseases according to established policies.

  • Communicates with Nurse Managers, physicians, department directors, hospital personnel and other health care providers to maximize patient outcomes.

  • Participates in providing education for employee regarding infection control during orientation and ongoing in-services as required.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:

  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse, issued by PA State Board of Nursing

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher level nursing degree is required.

  • Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) certification required within 30 months of hire.

  • Two (2) years of staff nursing

  • A health care provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid and other federal and state health insurance programs, i.e. not excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid or any other federal or state health insurance program

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) year of experience working in epidemiology.
