WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Quality Intern will work with the Quality Manager & quality team at Southern Tier Brewing Company, a member of the ABV family of brands. The Intern will gain exposure and learn to support the business by performing duties related to brewing, fermenting, and packaging, as well as quality monitoring at each of those steps. Responsibilities could be focused on one or two of these areas, or rotate through all of them, depending on the experience needs of the intern and faculty/curriculum specifications.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Sample collection and preparation

  • Preparation of sterile media for microbiological testing

  • Basic analytical testing

  • Microbiological plating

  • Interpreting microbiological results

  • Data entry

  • Glassware cleaning and handling

  • Autoclave operation

  • Auditing of product packaging

  • Sensory panel administration

  • Other duties as assigned by management

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Currently enrolled in a Brewing/Fermentation, Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, or similar science program at a post-secondary school or university with at least one completed semester of laboratory experience in a science class

  • Must be 21 for any beverage sampling

  • Experience in aseptic technique preferred

  • Comfortable calculating and making dilutions, including serial dilutions and handling conversions between units

  • Embrace the learn-as-you-go experience in a fast-paced environment where we can change directions and methods as necessary

  • Microsoft Office familiarity, particularly with Excel and Word

  • Ability to safely handle and work with reagents and other potentially hazardous chemicals

  • The ability to work well independently or as part of a team

  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Strong organizational skills & the ability to multitask

  • Strong work ethic and a high level of professionalism

Physical Demands

The Quality Intern will primarily perform work duties in a laboratory, with frequent trips to the production and warehouse areas. Use of stairs is required to travel from the lab to other parts of the brewery. While performing duties of the job, the Quality Intern will be regularly exposed to a damp, wet environment with hot liquids, airborne particles, chemicals, and moving machinery. There can also be loud noise levels. Protective eyewear is required any time the Intern is in any production area and safety-toed shoes must be worn when performing cellar chores.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is an internship opportunity. It is expected that 3 to 4 weeks of intensive training may be required during normal business hours, Monday – Friday, 7 AM – 5 PM. However, once the Intern is fully trained, it is expected that the Intern will be available to work approximately 20 hrs./wk. & may cover evening (5 PM – 1 AM) and weekend shifts on occasion.
