Asphalt Materials, Inc Assistant General Superintendent in Lafayette, Indiana

Milestone Contractors is a fully integrated highway, heavy construction, asphalt paving, concrete paving, and site-development general contractor providing construction services throughout the state of Indiana and beyond. We are currently hiring for an Assistant General Superintendent to join our team.

Position Summary: Working under general direction of General Superintendent, provides hands-on management for daily operations in general construction, asphalt, concrete, or bridge disciplines; maintaining the highest levels of safety and meeting or exceeding company and customer quality standards.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides day to day management oversight to assigned crews/superintendents
    • Plans and directs personnel on assigned projects, directly or indirectly
    • Collaborates with the equipment manager and others for effective equipment utilization
    • Interfaces with client representatives, customers, suppliers, vendors, union officials
    • Effectively manages project labor and labor costs
    • Collaborates with other departments to keep project on track
    • Communicates with General Superintendent to ensure work is completed on time and within budget
  • Manages financials
    • Assists with development of bids
    • Develops, monitors, and reports on operating costs within functional areas.
    • Makes recommendations and implements solutions to problems related to same
  • Develops employees
    • Coaches and mentors field staff
    • Supports direct reports' developmental activities
    • Ensures direct reports meet personal and professional developmental goals
    • Motivates employees and work groups to achieve productivity, performance, safety and quality goals
  • Communicates effectively
    • Represents company as project/company spokesperson
    • Shares information about project status with senior management; makes presentations to small and large groups
    • Collaborates with project control, estimating, scheduling and equipment to keep project on schedule
    • Facilitates collaboration among work groups
    • Resolves conflicts and labor relations issues; understands contract agreements with regard to scheduling and assigning work
  • Promotes and maintains safe work environment.
    • Exhibits safe work behaviors; evaluates work area for hazards; eliminates or controls hazards
    • Wears all prescribed PPE
    • Ensures subordinate employees are following safety policies and exhibiting safe behaviors

Supervision Given: Directly supervises Superintendents, Project Superintendents; provides indirect supervision to field employees

Work EnvironmentThe work environment described here is representative of those that experienced by an employee performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Regular exposure to job sites; outdoor conditions that include inclement weather, precipitation, heat, humidity, dust, asphalt and/or concrete, dirt, noise, including horns, mechanical equipment, heavy equipment, jackhammers, moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes and airborne particles
  • Indoor work environment includes normal office environment, private or semi-private, including computer equipment, phones, mobile phones and tablets

Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Sitting at a desk, using a computer keyboard, and looking at a screen for hours at a time; reading paperwork or job specs
  • Uses good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination, with the ability to quickly move arms and legs to visit job sites
  • Possess excellent stamina to work between 8-12 hours per day

Position Type/Expected Hours of WorkThis is a full-time position, normally 40 hours per week. Days and hours of work can vary, but shifts are normally 8 or more hours. Overtime, weekend and shift work are frequently required.

TravelTravel is primarily local during business day; some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Technology or other related field; OR equivalent work experience; OR a combination of a lesser degree and equivalent work experience
  • 10 or more years' experience in a construction management position in heavy highway industry

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Prior experience in heavy highway construction

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
  • Must adhere to drug free workplace and union substance abuse testing requirements
  • If required to drive a company vehicle, must have or be able to obtain valid, state driver's license and meet company driver requirements

Work Authorization/Security Clearance (if applicable)Must be authorized to work in the United States, as verified through E-Verify. Some job sites may require additional criminal background testing.
