Education / Training:

Required:

• BS Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or equivalent).

Preferred:

• MS in Engineering, or MBA.

Job Title:

Sr. Project Engineer - Locomotive Systems

La Grange

Key Job Elements:

Perform locomotive systems engineering duties for new locomotives. This role will support North American and international market segments.

A senior level engineer will have overall design and technical responsibility for the project as a whole. Multiple projects will be worked simultaneously;

Respond to new sales inquiries in a timely manner and create customer technical proposals; Tasks include locomotive performance studies, project cost estimates, and engineering cost estimates;

Interpret customer and commercial requirements and translate into locomotive engineering specifications and plans.

Applicant must be capable and comfortable making timely judgement calls on technical issues, based on often incomplete customer requirements;

Guide the design of the product to minimize cost and schedule. Contain scope creep on projects;

Conduct field testing for demonstration of contract requirements and for certification purposes;

Organize meetings with customers, vendors, and certifying agencies, making presentations and negotiating technical issues;

Organizing many tasks into a timeline. Holding required meetings with project team to ensure specification compliance and project execution in accordance with time and budget restrictions;

Making sure that all health, safety, legal and railroad regulatory (FRA, AAR, EN, AS/RISSB) requirements are being met throughout the process;

Domestic and international travel as required. This travel will not exceed 10% of employee’s time.

Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

• Knowledge of locomotive systems, such as structure, engine, cooling system, electrical system, pneumatic system, bogie, ventilation, or software;

• High level of analytical abilities where problems are very complex;

• High level of written and oral communication skills;

• Strong personal skills and the ability to work in groups;

• Project or team lead experience;

• 10+ years experience.

Preferred:

• Locomotive systems experience, or previous job assignments in multiple engineering disciplines;

• Familiarity with EMD engineering processes and systems;

• Experience in a customer facing role;

• Familiarity with Polarion, DOORS or similar requirements management tools;

• Familiarity with international standards and regulations (FRA, AAR, EN, AS/RISSB);

• Experience with project management methodology;

• Prior experience in testing, commissioning, or field service engineering.
