Key Job Elements:
• Work in a team environment as part of Progress Rail’s Traction Systems Design Group;
• Mechanical design, analysis, and testing of >250hp motors and generators;
• Conduct diagnostic investigations, analyze data, implement and verify fixes for resolution of field problems;
• Knowledge of manufacturing aspects of motors and generators;
• Responsible for creating & interpreting design, performance specifications, and providing compliant designs;
• Provide shop support and production problem resolution in areas of responsibility;
• Testing and validation of new designs and equipment;
• Stays abreast of new technology and competitive products;
• Provides technical direction to support personnel;
• Support Supply Chain in qualification of new suppliers;
• Travel as necessary, and flexibility to work on special assignments as required.
Qualifications and Experience:
Required:
• Minimum of 5 years practical work experience in Mechanical Engineering or related field;
• Knowledge of computer engineering software;
• Excellent analytical abilities where problems are very complex;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Understanding of mechanical aspects of machine design;
• Thorough understanding of manufacturing processes;
• Ability to work independently and with others.
Preferred:
• Previous locomotive familiarity and design experience with electrical rotating components;
• Previous experience with locomotive alternator and traction motor mechanical design;
• Familiarity or experience with PR manufacturing practices;
• FEA experience.
Essential and Physical Activities Functions
• Strength – Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment. Frequent/constant sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light to medium level lifting or carrying (up to 30 pounds);
• Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment. Depending on assigned project, position may occasionally require motions involved in an industrial working environment, including some low to intense levels of pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, grasping;
• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;
• Work Environment – Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE. Position may require travel as necessary, both domestic and international;
• Emotional Demands – Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards;
• Safety – Position may occasionally require the use of Personal Protective Equipment during visits to industrial areas.
