Job Description

The Education Director is responsible for the Aqqaluk Trust’s Educational Scholarship Program. The incumbent is responsible for the development and management of educational programs and other selected projects that fulfill the mission of Aqqaluk Trust.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manages and administers the scholarship program which includes reviewing incoming applications, facilitating the online application process with applicants, tracking incoming documents, determining applicant eligibility, and administering the award and disbursement process for 300-400+ award recipients, annually.

  • Lead staff in development in on-going fine tuning and maintenance of the online application process, serves as primary point-of-contact for communication with web developers.

  • Responsible for selection, training, and supervision of employees that may be hired under the Education Program, as needed.

  • Compile and prepare eligible scholarship reports for review and approval as requested to the Scholarship Committee and Board of Trustees.

  • Works with NANA shareholders to develop and improve pre-employment skills and qualifications, helps Shareholders identify their job skills and talents.

  • Prepares scholarships reports to NANA as requested.

  • Works closely with NANA Shareholder Development Department to:

  • Helps identify qualified and job ready candidates for employment and forwards those names to the proper individual(s).

  • Helps identify potential trainees/college interns for various employment programs and forwards those names to the proper organization(s).

  • Develop partnerships with educational organizations, schools, universities, etc.

  • Works with Shareholders and descendants to assist in their educational and vocational development.

  • Works with Teck Alaska, the Alaska Technical Center, and Chukchi College in the development of programs that will assist NANA’s Shareholders.

  • Works with the NANA shareholder relations group and the NANA Human Resources group on training and development, create and implement mentoring and internship programs, school-to-work programs, and related programs.

  • Work with Uqapiaqta Program Manager to develop and coordinate funding opportunities to promote program participation.

  • Special projects may be implemented as needed for the growth of the Education Program

  • Other various duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the areas of education, business, organizational or nonprofit management or other appropriate area of study, relevant experience may also be substituted on a year for year basis.

  • Three years of progressively responsible work experience

  • Demonstrated leadership experience and management skills that support a team-oriented environment

  • A valid Alaskan driver’s license. A willingness to travel frequently utilizing many different forms of transportation.

  • Strong analytic, written and verbal communication, and organizational skills are required

  • Proficiency with computer equipment and software : MS Windows Operating System, MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) – strong emphasis on proficiency with database programs

  • Experience with web-based applications and database management, preferred

  • Ability to set priorities, handle multiple tasks and application deadlines with a high degree of accuracy

  • Knowledge of postsecondary institutions and student financial aid requirements, preferred

  • Knowledge of general business formats and management procedures

  • Ability to compose business correspondence and create visual presentations

  • Proficient with proper grammar, good vocabulary, spelling, proofreading and editing

  • Knowledge of proper telephone etiquette

  • Use of basic office equipment such as copiers, printers, fax machine, copiers, and postage machine

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles

  • Knowledge of ANCSA and Alaska Native history

  • Ability to travel, as necessary, to fulfill the mission of The Aqqaluk Trust

Competencies

Physical Demands – The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
