Kodiak Area Native Association Clinical Director of Dental Services in Kodiak, Alaska

Responsible for providing clinical leadership, fostering superior quality patient care, developing dental strategic, goals and direction, and providing for the recruitment and retention of the dental staff. Administers KANAs dental program and directs departmental activities in accordance with accepted national standards and administrative policies. Independently provide dental and oral health care consistent with the highest recognized standards of clinical dentistry and the dental profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Continually strives to improve patient experience and quality of care by focusing on optimal patient access, continuity, team-based care, clinical information systems, patient self-management, and community engagement.
  • Collaborates with the Health Services Officer, Clinic Operations Director and other clinic management to ensure smooth operation of clinic and programs including staffing and patient visit ratios, scheduling, and cost-benefit of programs; advises on facilities and equipment purchases and repairs.
  • Supports the Quality Management Committee to ensure that all aspects of the Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance program are properly developed, implemented and coordinated.
  • Participates in the quality assurance review process as outlined in the KANA Dental Clinic Policy and Procedure Manual. This includes, but is not limited to, chart audit, treatment plan evaluation, and adherence to defined and accepted treatment modality and procedural protocol.
  • Supports Dental EHR maintenance, utilization and improvement.
  • Develops, reviews, and revises dental care related policies, protocols, and procedures.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, colleagues, and other KANA staff. Practices meaningful customer service skills, addressing patient and staff needs courteously and promptly.
  • Monitors and maintains the established protocol for patient referrals within and outside the tribal health system.
  • Collaborates with leadership to develop and support administration of department budget.
  • Maintains documentation and reporting measures of prevention activities.
  • Manages the Dental Hygiene professional staff to generate an increased level of Periodontal Health within the service population.
  • Observes and assists staff members to ensure safe and ethical practices, to solve problems, and to demonstrate techniques. Collaborates with Dental Practice Manager to establish work schedules and assign staff members to duty stations to maximize efficient use of staff.
  • Coaches, mentors, and trains dental staff by setting clear expectations and setting professional development goals for dental staff.
  • Provides comprehensive preventive Dental Services to Alaska Natives and other Beneficiaries of KANA.
  • Performs all aspects of that fall within a General Dentists technical and educational expertise.
  • Performs accurate and timely document entry and chart maintenance as outlined in the KANA Dental Clinic Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Attends and/or completes all regulatory compliance training assigned by KANA administrative staff.
  • Coordinates and participates in community outreach programs, serves on KANA committees, and prepares reports and other documentation as directed, assigned, or required.
  • Represents KANA in a positive and respectful manner assisting in the promotion and maintenance of good public relations among community groups and professional organizations.
  • Pursues professional growth and development through continuing education and other avenues to remain current in the improvements in the field of dentistry and strives to incorporate those improvements into the group practice when appropriate, maintaining licensure and other credentials as required.
  • Regularly travels by small plane to provide dental services to the village communities as assigned. Dentist will be scheduled village travel up to one visit per month for one to four-day visits based on the needs of the community.

Supervisory ResponsibilitiesDirectly supervises employees in the Dental Department. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Requirements: DDS/DMD. Five (5) years of demonstrated success in dental clinic
