JOB SUMMARY

The overall role of the Manufacturing Engineering Manager will be to successfully manage staff through product development, new product introduction, sustaining production and aftermarket support for our electrical and in-seat power systems and avionics data interface solutions, specifically our Cabin, Airborne Power Control and Ballard Technology product lines.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership, management and direction to the Manufacturing Engineering organization including Employee Development, Capacity Planning, Product Production, Product Planning, Lean Methodologies, Return Investigations and New Product Introduction

  • Be a positive and inspirational leader by modeling and reinforcing the Astronics AES Values and Behaviors. Recognize employee contributions, be an advocate and voice for team members, hold employees accountable and build collaboration across the team and other parts of the organization

  • Foster a collaborative environment between stakeholders (including suppliers) in support company goals, key initiatives, improvement projects and root cause investigations to eliminate waste, reduce costs, improve quality and manufacturability, and delivery performance

  • Participate with appropriate management team(s), assisting with the development and realization of strategic plans, capital and operating budgets, and other corporate goals. Develop an operational structure (including talent, equipment, processes, etc.) to carry out the companys operations plan. Set, manage and meet the overall Manufacturing Engineering Department budget

  • Ensure manufacturing process supports reliable, repeatable assembly of product to meet customer contractual requirements, quality expectations and regulatory requirements

  • Develop strong root cause, corrective action methodologies within the group, leading by example when appropriate. Focus on preventative methods (PFMEA, DFMEA, DFM, DFT, GR&R, etc.) to strengthen the manufacturing process and enhance the customers experience. Ensure that corrective actions implemented robustly address true root cause

  • Effectively communicate with all levels of the organization, suppliers, and customers, verbally and in writing, to minimize confusion on the status of projects, planning, decisions, priorities, etc.

  • Identify short-term and long-term strategic staffing requirements; identify and build internal and/or external talent to fulfill gaps in advance of the business need. Prioritize and manage employee workloads; break down barriers as needed. Provide employees with the requisite tools, training and resources to fulfil their job duties

  • Assess employee skills, competencies, and career path ambitions to establish training, goals and development plans

  • Address performance issues in a timely manner, provide clearly and succinct expectations and timelines for improvements

  • Provide mentorship, training, coaching, resources, and work assignments to foster employee growth

  • Create, maintain, and improve departmental procedures in alignment with business needs and industry best practices to improve system efficiencies and quality while maintaining products are compliant with all applicable regulatory, industry and customer contractual requirements

  • Lead capacity planning for people, capital equipment and facilities in support of current and future production. Work in conjunction with the Value Stream Managers to establish capacity planning tools as needed in support of the SIOP (Sales, Inventory, Operations & Planning) process

  • Partner with the Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) manager to make EH&S part of the company culture. Promote and recognize improvements that keep employees safe and healthy

  • Work with the Test Equipment department to clearly identify roles and responsibilities for performing repair, preventative maintenance, and calibration of manufacturing equipment. Provide appropriate staffing, training and tools to ensure timely response to equipment issues and minimize production down times

  • Consistently communicate the company vision and strategies and how employee actions contribute to the overall business objectives

  • Develop and report performance metrics in support of company objectives and lean initiatives. Engage with departmental customers to identify what they value; establish metrics to measure the teams effectiveness on meeting customer needs

  • Identify opportunities to work across other business units to optimize the use of core competencies

  • Participate in Supplier Business Reviews as necessary

  • Travel as required

  • Maintain the highest ethical standards

  • Understand and live by Astronics AES values and behaviors

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

  • BS/BA degree in engineering or another technical field

  • Experience:

  • Preferred – 2+ years of experience in regulated industry

  • Preferred – 2+ years of experience directly managing employees

  • Preferred – 5+ years of engineering or technical experience

Skills:

  • Be perpetually curiouss

  • Comfortable presenting information to internal groups and external customers

  • Advanced levels of business acumen and leadership experience

  • Ability to understand various business system tools and their interrelationships. Share and develop this understanding with others to advance Lean activities

  • Ability to read and interpret technical engineering drawings and Bills of Material

  • Ability to grasp the interrelationships between various business system tools and educate your team on how to utilize this knowledge to advance Lean activities

  • Experience with standard work, labor analysis, workplace study, and time studies

  • Experience with budgeting and profit center reporting

  • Comfortable in making decisions in a rapid paced, dynamic evolving environment

  • Skilled in developing appropriate lines of communication and effective relationships with government, customer and interdepartmental personnel

  • Full mastery of Lean tools including cellular manufacturing, 5S, standard work, value stream mapping, and Kaizen (desired)

  • Solid command of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point, OneNote and Project (desired)

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a US Person (under ITAR rules) to be eligible

  • An offer of employment is contingent on successfully passing a drug test and background check. Applicants who do not successfully pass both the drug test and background check will not be considered for employment

Salary range for this position is $111,929 - $167,893 per year. Several job-related and non-discriminatory factors including but not limited to experience in comparable roles, skill sets, training, education, licensure or certifications, other qualifications, market conditions and business needs influence actual salary offered. At Astronics AES, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range.
