The role you’ll contribute:

The Advent Health of Central Texas System’s Emergency Department (ED) has an 8-bed behavioral health safe area within the 38-bed main Emergency Department. The ED is divided into two areas; Horizontal Zone (HZ) 30 beds (25 exam rooms and 5 critical care rooms), an 8 bed sub-unit capable of handling behavioral health (BH) patients and Vertical Zone (VZ) (15) recliner chairs to manage lower acuity ESI 3, 4 and 5. The ED is a Trauma Level IV designated trauma center, Chest Pain Center with primary PCI and resuscitation, and Primary Stroke Center.

The ED Behavioral Health Registered Nurse (RN) will be part of a dynamic and collaborative team of inter-disciplinary team members, including Nurses, Psychiatrists, Emergency Department Physicians, Social Workers, and ancillary personnel as we provide emergency care to our most vulnerable mental health population. This role entails conducting rapid and comprehensive assessments, prioritizing interventions based on patients' mental health status, and administering appropriate treatments in alignment with established protocols. Collaborating closely with psychiatrists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals, the ER Behavioral Health Nurse will contribute to the development and execution of personalized care plans. Moreover, the Nurse will offer patient and family education, maintain meticulous documentation, and ensure adherence to regulatory guidelines.

Our ideal candidate would have at least one year of inpatient or behavioral crisis nursing experience and is looking to take on the next challenge in their career. The ED BH RN provides direct patient centered care in a critical care area as part of a multidisciplinary team to prioritize care through appropriate triage, assess the needs of the patient and provide treatment, and properly disposition the patient.

The ED BH RN works full time, part time or PRN. Variable shifts to meet the needs of the department which operates 24 hour a day, seven days a week. Weekend work is required.

The ED BH RN performs a wide variety of job duties during their shifts; promotes and restores patients’ health by collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary team members, completing the nursing process and the patients’ plans of care, providing emotional, physical and spiritual support to the patients and their families and supervising assigned team members. The ED BH RN utilizes physical assessment skills and advanced diagnostic technology to aid in the assessment of the patient’s nursing care needs. The ED BH RN continues to monitor and assess the patient’s physical condition, emotional and social needs, continually refining the plan-of-care to ensure achievement of the desired goals of the patient and facility outcomes.

The ED BH RN is under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and the assigned Team Lead Nurse. Actual roles and tasks may vary depending upon the area assigned.

· Provides for delivery of patient care through assessment with identification and prioritization of presenting problems or needs, to facilitate optimum patient care

· Evaluates patients presented to the Emergency Room upon their arrival

o Prioritizes care upon evaluation using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) tool

o Assigns patients to appropriate treatment area based upon observations, vital signs, a brief history and/or assigned ESI triage level

o Informs charge nurse and/or physician of urgent/emergency cases

· Performs, properly documents and reports all procedures and assessments in accordance with departmental and hospital policy.

· Assesses for, documents and intervenes when abuse or neglect suspected

· Recognizes potential emergency/life threatening situations and implements preventive measures

Qualifications

The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed :

· A graduate of an accredited school of nursing or degree program

· Our ideal candidate would have at least 1.0 years of inpatient or behavioral crisis nursing experience

· Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Texas or Compact State

· BLS
