Conservation Land Stewards work closely with TNC state-wide Stewardship Team members and may assist partner organizations as needed. The Nature Conservancy is hiring one temporary Conservation Land Steward for the Adirondacks.Conservation Land Stewards will spend most of their time working outside in the field at various properties in the greater Adirondack region. Most preserves (but not all) are within a 1 hour drive of the Adirondack Chapter office in Keene Valley, NY. Stewards will be expected to work independently and to drive to field sites that may be several hours away from their base location. A TNC vehicle will be provided for transportation upon completion of vehicle safety courses. Training will be provided for all tasks. Conservation Land Stewards will have frequent opportunities to learn new skills and gain experience in the fields of conservation and land management, as well as learn about conservation efforts in the Adirondacks.WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOUStewardship (80%): Assist Stewardship Team with on-the-ground aspects of nature preserve stewardship, project planning and implementation, facilities management, and improving access to TNC preserves. Tasks include boundary marking and maintenance; trail construction and maintenance; parking lot maintenance; signage development and creation; routine mowing of trails, grounds and wildlife habitats. Tasks may also include participating in events with partner groups, attending seminars or courses on improving accessibility, and collaborating with other stewards around New York State. Conservation Land Stewards will interact with the public, volunteers, adjacent landowners and stakeholders. Tasks may also include property monitoring, GIS data collection, preserve project research and implementation, and occasional conservation easement stewardship.Conservation Management (20%): Assist Stewardship Team with managing and monitoring of conservation targets. Specific management targets depend upon location but may include forest management; improving access to outdoor spaces; and invasive species management. Tasks may include scientific field data collection; monitoring of wildlife habitat and/or forest health; assisting with preparation of reports; and implementing changes at preserves to improve access.Conservation Land Stewards will spend most of their time working outside in the field at various properties in the greater Adirondack region. Conservation Land Stewards will have frequent opportunities to learn new skills and gain experience in the fields of conservation and land management, as well as learn about conservation efforts in the Adirondacks.WHAT YOU'LL BRING* High school diploma or GED and 1 year's training in a science related field, or a related experience in land management.* Experience recognizing plant and animal species.* Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, canoe, or similar equipment.* Experience working a team environment.* Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g. First Aid, CPR).DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS* Academic coursework in ecology, forestry management, conservation, environmental studies, land use, or geography.* Interest in developing new partnerships with organizations in the greater Adirondack region.* Experience in developing interpretive signage, graphic design, naturalist education, outdoor education, or accessible sign design.* Valid drivers' license.* Willingness and ability to complete TNC required safety qualifications (for example, a volunteer and youth safety qualification).* Ability to navigate in the backcountry and read maps.* Adequate home internet connection.ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATIONThe Nature Conservancy is hiring one temporary Conservation Land Steward for the Adirondacks. Flexible start day in May of 2025, anticipated end date in October, 2025. This position will be a mix of remote work and field work.AUTO SAFETY POLICYThis position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC's Auto Safety Program. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
