Performs diagnostic medical ultrasound imaging exams to assist with the diagnosis of disease and study of the malfunction of organs. Participates in CQI activities.

  • Performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations according to physician orders.
  • Utilizes the appropriate equipment as required for the ordered exam.
  • Provides instructions and prepares patients for ultrasound examinations.
  • Able to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure; makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Enters exam data and accurate patient information into computer systems.
  • Moves transducer, by hand, over specified area of the body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.
  • Performs highest quality imaging consistent with prescribed examination, and accurate documentation.
  • Maintains professional interaction with physicians, co-workers, patient, and patients family.
  • Performs all quality control checks, as prescribed.
  • Maintains accurate QC logs, service records, etc.
  • Maintains records of ultrasound images taken, archiving, and de-archiving data as required; calculates, compiles and records data from numerical readings on patient's medical record and related documents.
  • Understands and practices proper use of all equipment; never operates equipment inconsistent with manufacturer's instruction.
  • Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing ultrasound examinations including the use of equipment to minimize safety hazards.
  • Calibrates, cleans and performs routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning; cleans and sterilizes instruments, supplies and equipment; stocks and replenish supplies as needed
  • Documentation meets current standards and hospital policy
  • Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population.
  • Performs all additional duties as assigned by the department manager.

Regulatory Requirements:

  • Successful completion of an approved program in ultrasound technology required.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography is preferred.
  • Must be registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
  • One(1)year of ultrasound experience preferred.
  • Certification in abdomen and OB/GYN required other certifications preferred.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate.
