Job Description
Performs phlebotomy procedures, provides timely test ordering, schedules tests and conducts test procedures. Works directly with the Support Service Supervisor to facilitate work flow of Outpatient Laboratory area. Cleans laboratory equipment as necessary and assists in clerical duties of the department, such as answering phones and ordering supplies. Responsible for general and specific duties as outlined below depending on specific job assignment. May perform duties of Laboratory Information Processing Specialist (PCN 0106). Performs duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision.
High school diploma or equivalent
Detailed knowledge of clerical and office practices, knowledge of computer and troubleshooting
Good organizational abilities, time management and priority setting
Verbal communication skills required to explain procedures to patients
Knowledge of human development process and ability to work effectively with patients of all ages required
Writing skills required to maintain various records
Ability to order tests and/or test results on a computer terminal required
Must have physical ability to walk long distances for long periods of time, lean across the bedside to draw blood, or to push a cart
Must be able to carry a phlebotomy tray and lift and carry a filled gallon bottle
Must be able to work weekend, holidays, and rotate various shifts, if needed
Good working knowledge of hospital functions, working knowledge of good supervisory practices, laboratory support functions, and adult learning principles and teaching techniques
