Motrex LLC Manager, Quality and Continuous Improvement in Kansas City, Missouri

Overview

The Quality/CI Leaderwill provide leadership in the day to day activities for all departments within the facility and partner with Engineering and Production to solve problems and improve quality, Manage product and process data collection and summaries, Corrective Action System, Calibration, internal auditing, and key customer activities. This individual should have a thorough working knowledge of ISO 9001-2015 Quality System Requirements, OEM expectations, and the Quality Operating System of Manufacturing and Distribution.

The Quality/CI Leader will provide leadership for developing and implementing and maintaining a plant-wide team system to develop a culture of improving key performance indicators such as manufacturing OEE, product quality, waste reduction, energy conservation, safety and operating costs. Utilize Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, techniques, and tools to facilitate the transfer of such learning in the plant, develop individual champions and teams necessary to support continuous improvement activities consistent with business goals. Focus will be to conduct these activities in conjunction with other organizational functional leaders and members to solicit support for implementing continuous improvements to all processes.

Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully this individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Responsibilities include;

  • Provide day to day quality support to manufacturing and quality assurance in the form of plans and procedures.

  • Maintain excellent corporate, customer and vendor working relationships which will enable working out the most difficult of quality issues.

  • Participate in the establishment of quality specifications for raw materials, goods in process, and finished product.

  • Develop and implement quality control inspection and sampling techniques which will assure products meet company and customer quality standards.

  • Conduct research on product defects, test performance, plant reject and scrap, and recommend process or product changes to overcome quality issues.

  • Assist with conducting and preparation of quality audits and reports.

  • Work with the team on problem solving initiatives and link actions and outcomes to Control Plans. PFMEA’s, plant inspection points, and Customer returns.

  • Coordinate team efforts with corrective action resolution for internal KPI’s and external customer issues (assembly plant complaints and warranty initiatives)

  • Performs other miscellaneous duties inherent to the job.

  • Understanding of QA testing requirements to ensure all products meet customer expectations.

  • Follow all established standard operating procedures while performing QA testing in QA laboratory.

  • Provide inputs to establish Quality Objectives in accordance with Corporate, QMS and Plant goals.

  • With the Management Team helps determine training needs and ensure training takes place as scheduled in the areas of responsibility.

  • Ensure Corrective and Preventive action tasks that are assigned are completed in a timely manner in accordance with QMS objectives.

  • Develop a Lean strategy for the plant to include specific goals, objectives, timetables, action plans, and key leader (hourly and salaried) enlistment strategies

  • Train and mentor the leadership team and engineering staff in the principles, methods, and applications of the Lean process such that continuous improvement efforts are integrated into change management processes

  • Coordinate plant level Lean initiatives with Company's continuous improvement initiatives to ensure optimum use of resources and minimize redundancies

  • Coordinate efforts with functional leaders, supervisors, and hourly associates in identifying improvement opportunities within the plant and develop justifications to substantiate potential cost savings to the plant

  • Conduct time and motion studies and/or utilize value stream mapping and process charting establish and validate production standards and to troubleshoot and streamline work flows

  • Foster and support the development of continuous improvement teams

  • Participate in training and development programs including all areas of environmental, health and safety issues, especially those dealing with proper handling of hazardous materials and hazardous waste

Authorities include;

  • Rejecting nonconforming material as determined by the customer quality standards following current Standard Operating Procedures and Control Plans.

  • Placing nonconforming material on hold for review and scrapping when appropriate.

  • Stopping production as necessary when nonconformities are present per current Standard Operating Procedures and Control Plans.

Supervisory Responsibilities;

  • Responsible for providing technical guidance and direction to positions including CI Specialist. Day to day supervision responsibilities include determining departmental training needs, evaluation of subordinate job performance, recommend salary/title changes, determining hire/fire actions, and disciplinary actions for employees engaged in quality control operations. Coaching and developing employees for future opportunity and to assure accountability and adherence to established policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education and/or experience;

  • Minimum of 4 year technical degree in science, engineering or quality. Prefer degree in engineering.

  • 5-8 years related experience as a quality assurance engineer or equivalent at a corporate and/or manufacturing plant level, preferably a tier I supplier to the automotive industry.

  • CQE preferred.

  • Prior continuous improvement experience required.

  • Six Sigma training Green Belt preferred.

Competencies, skills, knowledge;

  • Demonstrate leadership skills.

  • Proficient in problem solving – root cause analysis, 5 why, etc.

  • Must be quality CI and customer oriented.

  • Knowledgeable in ISO 9001-2015 quality standards; APQP methodology; Control Plans, FMEAs, and PPAPs.

  • Knowledgeable in Six-Sigma and Lean tools.

  • Must be able to work independently and in a team-oriented environment on multiple projects.

  • Strong verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong computer skills -Windows-based programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, individual is regularly required to stand, walk, extend arms for reaching and use hands to perform tasks. Individual is frequently required to sit, stand, and walk through congested warehouse areas. Must be able to wear appropriate respiratory protection as needed. Must be able to work extended shift hours and weekends as needed. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Requires frequent climbing of one flight of stairs and occasional exposure to pathway hazards. Ambient temperature in warehouse area ranges from an extreme of over 100 degrees outdoors and around 90 in warehouse in summer to below freezing outdoors in the winter and 60 degrees inside in winter. Continuous exposure to airborne lead and cadmium particles at levels that may require the use of respiratory protection equipment and biological monitoring as prescribed by the OSHA Lead and Cadmium Standards. Must be able to successfully pass respirator fit test and pass physical exam by company doctor including blood, urine and respiratory function testing and analysis.
