Logan Health Pharmacy Technician Specialist - Inpatient Hospital Pharmacy in Kalispell, Montana

Job Description Summary:

Logan Health Medical Center's Inpatient Hospital Pharmacy is looking for a Pharmacy Technician Specialist to join its team in Kalispell, MT.

This role involves supporting medication dispensing activities, including drug distribution, ordering, and control. The position operates under the supervision of a manager, supervisor, or pharmacist. Responsibilities include assisting in coordinating the work of Pharmacy Technicians, providing training, and serving in a leadership role. The candidate should demonstrate proficiency in one or more specialized areas such as Tech-Check-Tech compliance, pharmacy purchasing, Oncology IV Admixture, Pediatric Pharmacy, or Night Pharmacy.

Qualifications:

  • Must meet all of the qualifications for the Montana Board of Pharmacy Technician application. Completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program preferred. Prior health care experience preferred.

  • Upon employment must satisfy one (1) of the following:

  • Active licensure with the Montana Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) in good standing.

  • Currently enrolled as a Pharmacy Student in an accredited University Program (second year or higher).

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a hospital Pharmacy Technician at an outside facility or through our Pharmacy Tech and Advance Tech programs.

  • Inpatient Pharmacy: Proficient working knowledge of aseptic technique for preparing sterile products required. Proficient in sundry duties to include non-sterile and/or sterile compounding or other advanced skill set preferred.

  • RQI First Responder required.

  • Possess and maintain computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other software as needed.

  • Must have an understanding of medical terminology and calculations. Must have fluent knowledge of medication brand and generic names.

  • Prior experience in various Pharmacy Software Systems and Electronic Health Records preferred. Possess ability to learn other software as needed.

  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, a self-starter, possess critical thinking skills and be able to set priorities and function as part of a team as well as independently.

  • Commitment to working in a team environment and maintaining confidentiality as needed.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.

Job Specific Duties:

Understands and completes all aspects of medication distribution from the pharmacy to all areas assigned including but not limited to; inpatient and/or outpatient dispensing. These duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Filling the automated dispensing machines and utilizing the bar code scanning. Filling patient drawers in all nursing units.

  • Delivering medications in the most efficient manner to all areas assigned.

  • These duties will be supervised and verified by a pharmacist and/or technician that is currently a tech-check-tech technician.

  • Completes rounds according to current policy. This includes delivering and retrieving medications, debiting and crediting medications to patient specific accounts to ensure accurate billing. This process will be coordinated with other pharmacy personnel to meet the immediate needs of the pharmacy department.

  • Performs all the tasks associated with maintaining the pharmacy inventory. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Ordering, receiving, and shelving medications.

  • Documents and communicates drug shortages.

  • Monitors the pharmacy inventory for out dated medications, and disposes according to current policy.

  • Exhibits a working knowledge of all the pharmacy computer systems.

  • Aids in staff development, orients new employees and students, participates in quality assessment, and improvement projects.

  • Maintains a neat and orderly environment. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Cleaning duties.

  • Medication disposal

  • Trash disposal

  • Actively continues education to keep abreast of Pharmacy law and to maintain current licensure.

  • Manufactures, prepares, compounds, packages and labels pharmaceuticals within a specialized program such as the IV additive service, non-sterile compounding, oncology medications and/or the investigational drug service.

  • Actively compounds IV additive medications using sterile, aseptic techniques according to current policies and federal regulations. Maintains sterile environment in the clean room according to current policies and procedures. Respects the importance of accuracy and sterility in product preparation, thus allowing the pharmacist to confidently verify that the products have been prepared properly. This is critical to ensure patient safety.

  • Inpatient Pharmacy Specialty Technician may compound chemotherapy products. Understands the inherent dangers these products may have for themselves and the patients. Utilizes education and environmental protection tools and mitigates dangers to the best of their abilities at all times. Respects the importance of demonstrating accuracy and sterility in product preparation as this is critical to ensure patient safety.

  • Inpatient Pharmacy: May participate in the state approved “tech-check-tech” program. Respects the significance of being the final check in the process and understands the responsibility assumed in this role.

  • 340B/Compliance Technician: Understands, evaluates and enforces the principal requirements for participation in the 340B program and pharmacy compliance. Performs (not limited to) audits, reports, and tracking of compliance.

  • Informatics Technician: Functions as the lead in the use of technology systems in the pharmacy department and assists in maintenance of the systems

Schedule: Variable - 10 hour shift

Logan Health operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed.
