Position Specific Description
Overview: Join NextEra Energy’s Tribal Relations team, working collaboratively with tribal communities on energy projects during project development and construction.
A Tribal Relations Senior Project Manager works closely with Tribal Historic Preservation Officers and other Tribal cultural leads to support Tribal and Indigenous relations during the development, construction, and operation of energy projects across the US. This position also provides continuous support to NextEra’s development team including due diligence, project schedule management, permitting compliance, and interface with Tribal, federal, and state agencies. This role can be based near any location with access to a major airport that will support the travel schedule.
Specifically, this position will:
Build and manage relationships with Tribal representatives and stakeholders
Support new and existing corporate development opportunities for NextEra Energy with potential focus in Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado
Respond to Tribal community requests on issue resolution and community support
Manage Tribal involvement and maintain schedules in multiple projects simultaneously
Coordinate seamlessly with various departments on projects involving tribal lands
Advise wider team on necessary permits and approvals for projects under Tribal and federal regulations
Serve as the subject matter expert resolving Tribal jurisdictional and cultural resource matters to ensure compliance with all laws and regulations
Develop awareness for Tribes’ ancestral areas of interest
Assess and communicate potential project risks
Preferred Requirements:
J.D. preferred with knowledge of federal Indian law, administrative law, and environmental law. This may be substituted by 8 plus years of experience working directly in or with Tribal governments and/or cultural resource management
Experience with Tribal and/or non-tribal governmental affairs
Ability to travel 5-15 days per month
Understanding of laws and regulations related to cultural resource protection
Strong communication, presentation, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work well with internal and external stakeholders
Self-starter with strong time management and attention to detail
Knowledge of energy projects, including legal, finance, transmission, interconnection, permitting, engineering, and public policy
Job Overview
Employees in this role develop and execute plans for new and enhanced generation projects. This job is responsible for resource allocation, schedules, cost and technical adequacy, ensuring the project or transaction is completed in the most cost-effective and competitive manner. This position manages all aspects of the business deal and ensures the project is completed on time and within budgetary constraints.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Manages all aspects of the day-to-day transaction process to ensure timely completion as well as a cost-effective and competitive result
Leads and coordinates key functions such as financial feasibility analyses, engineering/design, project legal review, permitting activities and financial negotiations
Responsible for managing multiple and complex projects
Coordinates due diligence activities with other internal groups to ensure proper analysis and structuring of assigned projects
Acts as liaison between internal and external specialists regarding procurement, contracting, permitting and interconnection
Constructs contractual arrangements for project development
Negotiates agreements with consultants and subcontractors
Ensures compliance with applicable technical and regulatory requirements
Fosters external relationships with customers, third parties and members of the community
Performs other job-related duties as assigned
