Position Summary:

The Skilled Trades Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the skilled tradesman in one of the zones across campus: This position oversees tradesmen that are skilled in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and/or mechanical trades. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the work of subordinate skilled and semi-skilled tradesmen by prioritizing work assignments, establishing deadlines and reviewing the work performed to ensure craft accuracy and compliance with established trade practices

  • Determines schedules, sequences, and assignments for work activities based on work priority, quantity of equipment, and skill of subordinates

  • Plans small projects to be completed by the zone and prepares material lists and work schedules

  • Reads and interprets blueprints to determine the layout of mechanical systems

  • Computes estimates and actual costs of factors, such as materials, labor, and outside contractors

  • Processes work orders assigned to the respective zone, making sure that the labor and materials associated with the completed work is correct.

  • Monitors work level of subordinates and assists employees to correct job skill deficiencies

  • Keeps records of projects, materials used, and equipment, tools and labor requirements

  • Requisitions materials and supplies, such as tools, equipment and replacement parts

  • Checks status of work in progress and makes inspections of completed work for compliance with applicable specifications and codes

  • Assists in the performing of skilled trade duties and training of apprentice tradesmen

  • Coordinates respective activities with other zones working on renovation and construction projects

  • Works alone, as well as alongside all members of the zone, making sure all work assigned to the zone is completed in a timely and efficient manner .

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of policy and procedures, laws, and regulations relating to one or more of the skilled trades, licensure and certification required for one or more of the skilled trades, the methods, practices, and safety precautions in one or more of the skilled trades, the standard practices, processes, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment, and materials, methods, and tools involved in the maintenance, repair, and/or construction of buildings or other structures

Ability to calculate time, materials, and labor needed for projects, read and interpret blueprints, manuals, schematics, building plans, and drawings for one or more of the skilled trades, and communicate information and ideas in various environments

General Days/Hours:

Monday - Friday

7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This position is considered Essential Personnel in Facilities Management

Preferred Qualifications:

Completion of required education or training along with the required license or certification in the following skilled trades:

Journeyman Electrician according to ACA 17-28-304, Journeyman Plumber according to ACA 17-38-301, and HVAC Mechanics according to ACA 17-33-301

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a High School Diploma

Six (6) years of experience, including one (1) year in a leadership capacity

Preferred to posses a valid Driver's License

Other job related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements, except for certification or licensure requirements, upon approval of the qualifications review committee
