  • This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I position in the Roadside Environmental Unit. In this position you will be responsible for planning and scheduling pesticide application activities and beautification program activities throughout Division 4.

  • You will be required to work in diverse working environments performing various general maintenance operations. You will supervise the plant bed maintenance crew working in and around heavy traffic, utilizing spray equipment, and power tools.

  • You must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently as needed. Responsibilities include the supervision of plant bed maintenance crew spraying weeds, operating skid sprayers, backpack sprayers, mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, chippers, flatbed truck, and any other vegetation management equipment to keep the plant beds within the division weed free.

  • In this position you will be training personnel in the operation of spray equipment; modifying existing equipment to facilitate more efficiency; preparing daily herbicide spraying reports; reviewing and evaluating herbicide performance for future planning; conducting tailgate safety meetings; supervising the calibration of all pesticide spray equipment; preparing job reports, time sheets, and inventory records. Snow and ice removal and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs will be required.

  • In this position you may be required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes. You will investigate and answer concerns from the public.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience in correctly applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the label, as well as proper storage and disposal techniques

  • Experience operating equipment designed for all aspects of landscape operations

  • Experience in record keeping, including tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of material used

  • Experience leading subordinates and directing the daily activities of a work crew

Additional Expectations:

This position requires a Public Pesticide Operator Classification Pesticide License issued by North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services with categories for Right-of-Way and Ornamental & Turf required or ability to obtain within six months from date of hire. Employee must be able to operate a medium duty dump truck or flatbed truck safely. Skill in the safe use and care of assigned equipment, hand and power tools. Employee must use sound judgment and take initiative in carrying out Roadside Environmental operations. Must maintain complete records on personnel, equipment, and materials. Must be able to communicate effectively with the general public, co-workers, and other agency personnel. Should have a good working knowledge of basic computer operations and be familiar with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Google Maps (or other internet mapping applications). Familiarity with other computer programs/applications such as Microsoft Power Point, County GIS websites would be preferred. Physical activities required are standing, walking, the ability to traverse steep and uneven terrain and the ability to lift and safely carry up to 50 pounds. The selected applicant must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
