Fire Protection Engineer

BBandE is a full service civil and environmental engineering and consulting firm, headquartered in Northville, Michigan, which services both the Federal and Industrial sectors throughout the United States. BBandE team members provide Environmental Consulting, Facilities Engineering and Program/Project Management Services to Federal and private sectors.

Position Summary

BBandE is currently looking for aFire Protection Engineerto provide Fire Protection Engineering design support services to support Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build projects and associated efforts undertaken by NAVFAC Pacific, Planning Design and Construction Directorate, Design Division (PDC4) atNAVFAC Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, HI.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs fire protection engineering for new and existing facilities to include analysis/basis, plans, specifications, calculations and estimates for acquisition of active and passive fire protection systems for protection of various facility types; fire protection systems include, but are not limited to, water-based fire suppression system, standpipe system, chemical-based fire suppression system, gaseous clean agent fire suppression system, fire pump and control system, water supply and storage system, firefighting access and fire hydrant systems, advance early warning and conventional fire alarm/detection and mass notification system, fire alarm reporting system, smoke control/management system, structural fireproofing system, firestop system, national recognized testing laboratory testing requirements, life safety and means of egress system, fire resistance rated construction and opening protective systems, facility mutual fire exposure protection system, building code allowable facility size regulations, electrical hazard classifications, hazardous material/waste protection, life safety power supply system, marking and illumination of egress system, etc.
  • Coordinates with team members to execute project scope, schedules, and budgets in conformance with the project and customer requirements
  • Facilitates the minimization of project delays by providing technical reviews and recommendations when requested within predetermined timeframes
  • Researches codes, guidance, policies, procedures, processes, criteria and Federal laws and regulations and provides sound technical recommendations both verbally and in writing
  • Applies innovative technical principles, practices and theories to the resolution of technical issues
  • Coordinates with the Government client, NAVFAC team members, leadership, project stakeholders, and various regulatory agencies
  • Coordinates and facilitates meetings, makes recommendations based on project requirements, coordinates workflow processes, schedules/coordinates plans of actions and milestones (POAMs) and effectively communicates findings to project personnel; provides written minutes for all meetings
  • Reviews technical reports, RFIs, designs, design changes for both design-build and design bid build projects, project deliverables, submittals, cost proposals from contractors, etc. to ensure compliance with customer and RFP requirements
  • Provides technical support for the review of the commissioning plan, design and construction submittals, and field inspections
  • Provides technical support for the construction field activities
  • Provides summary of accomplishments during weekly meetings and in a prepared monthly status report
  • Field investigations are excluded; no travel required

Key Qualifications

  • US Citizen
  • Security Clearance: Secret (Tier 3 preferred) or ability to obtain
  • Demonstrated experience performing fire protection engineering for new and existing facilities to include analysis/basis, plans, specifications, calculations and estimates for acquisition of active and passive fire protection systems for protection of various facility types
  • Well ver ed with the National Electric Code
  • Demonstrated knowledge of broad-based Engineering principles and versed in the discipline being hired
  • Sound understanding of technical concepts, principles and practices applicable to multi-disciplined engineering project design
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing correspondence, written reports, and in briefing management personnel
  • Demonstrated experience in the use and application of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.), AutoCAD and/or Revit, etc.
  • The ability to adapt to new software such as eCMS, MS Teams and Zoom may also be necessary
  • P.E. desired, but not required

Experience and Education

  • Minimum of 6 years of Design Management and/or Design experience
  • Graduate of an accredited Engineering college curriculum (4-year degree)

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position at least 60% of the time
  • Able to operate office equipment, including computer, copy machine, phone, etc.
  • Capable of light lifting, under 10 lbs.
