Donald Hines Farm Farm Manager in Jacksonville, North Carolina

Job Summary: Donald Hines Farms seeksa dedicated and enthusiastic Assistant Farm Operator to join our team. The ideal candidate will support our vegetable farm's day-to-day operations, which include producingbeans, broccoli, eggplant, green peppers, squash, zucchini, and tomatoesfarmed by conventional means. This role involves hands-on fieldwork, machinery operation, and administrative duties. This is an On-the-Job Training (OJT) opportunity.

Key Responsibilities: 1. Field Work:

  • Prepare soil for planting by tilling, fertilizing, and bed preparation.
  • Plant and transplant seeds and seedlings for beans, broccoli, eggplant, green peppers, squash, zucchini, and tomatoes.
  • Set up, monitor, and maintain irrigation systems, ensuring optimal water management for each crop.
  • Identify and manage pests and diseases using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies.
  • Perform manual and mechanical weed control.
  • Harvest crops at the appropriate time, utilizing proper techniques to minimize damage and ensure quality.
  • Handle post-harvest processes, including washing, sorting, and storage.

2. Advanced Farming Practices:

  • Conduct soil tests and apply appropriate soil amendments.
  • Implement crop rotation and succession planting plans to optimize yield and soil health.
  • Practice sustainable farming techniques, such as conservation tillage and cover cropping.
  • Participate in small-scale projects focused on soil health and sustainable farming.

3. Machinery and Technology:

  • Safely operate farm machinery, including tractors and tillers.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot machinery issues.

4. Administrative and Management:

  • Maintain accurate records of planting, fertilization, irrigation, pest control, and harvest activities.
  • Manage inventory of seeds, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist in budgeting and financial planning, including understanding farm revenue streams and cost control.
  • Support marketing and sales efforts, including direct marketing at farmers markets and through CSA programs, as well as online marketing and social media engagement.

5. Continuous Learning and Development:

  • Participate in regular performance reviews and set goals for further development.
  • Attend relevant agricultural workshops and seminars.
  • Engage in online courses and certifications to stay updated with new farming techniques and technologies.
  • Work closely with an experienced farm operator for mentorship and guidance.

Qualifications:

Previous experience in farming or agriculture is preferred but not required.

Basic knowledge of vegetable farming and crop production.
