Henry Ford Health System Medical Laboratory Scientist in Jackson, Michigan

Responsible for performing routine and complex analytic procedures on blood, bodily fluids and specimens, including using manual techniques, laboratory instruments, and information systems to ensure accurate testing; perform chemical, cytologic, hematologic, histologic, microscopic, morphologic, immunologic and/or microbiologic procedures on laboratory specimens, using manual or automated techniques and information systems; apply knowledge and independent clinical judgment to develop solutions and to improve processes and resolve problems; evaluate instrument performance and quality control results to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release; correlate results with other lab data and disease states; support the identification of technical, instrument, pharmacologic and physiologic causes of unexpected test results; perform calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, instruments and laboratory information systems; collaborate with leadership staff to improve processes and resolve problem; follow successful completion of competency testing; perform processing, testing, and reporting procedures; ensure compliance with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, including quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control; maintain confidentiality of patient information; participate in various quality assessment and improvement activities including, proficiency testing, gathering data for quality assurance monitors, developing and adhering to safe work practices, participating in quality improvement committees, and successfully completing regular competency assessments; utilize and apply knowledge of laboratory safety/accreditation standards, specimen collection procedures, venipuncture, capillary puncture, laboratory specimen handling techniques, manual/automated laboratory specimen analysis, laboratory quality control processes/statistical analysis, medical laboratory results evaluations, medical laboratory equipment use/maintenance/calibration, and chemistry/hematology/phlebotomy medical laboratory procedures to perform duties; maintain the laboratory and procedure in inspection ready condition; communicate with internal and external customers, including nurses, physicians and other health care workers concerning laboratory results, procedures, technology, and related issues; assist in the development and design of new test procedures and methodologies; participate in the evaluation, correlation, and introduction of new instruments and procedures; help validate new laboratory information system software; attend, participate in, and present department continuing education and in-service programs; and perform phlebotomy or other related duties as assigned.

Hours: Night/Third Shift Position.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, or in a related field of study (will accept equivalent foreign degree);

Training: None;

Experience: Six (6) months in the position above, as a Medical Laboratory Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Assistant, or in a related occupation;

Other Requirements: Experience must include six (6) months use of all the following: laboratory safety/accreditation standards, specimen collection procedures, venipuncture, capillary puncture, laboratory specimen handling techniques, manual/automated laboratory specimen analysis, laboratory quality control processes/statistical analysis, medical laboratory results evaluations, medical laboratory equipment use/maintenance/calibration, and chemistry/hematology/phlebotomy medical laboratory procedures; and must be ASCP MLS, AAB, or AMT certification eligible.

Will also accept any suitable combination of education, training and/or experience.
