Cornell Cooperative Extension
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)

Ithaca, New York

Who We Are

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: We believe that achieving next-generation scientific breakthroughs requires an understanding of the world's complex, interlocking systems. We believe that access to nutritious food and a healthy environment is a fundamental human right. We believe that ensuring a prosperous global future depends on the ability to support local people and communities everywhere. By working in and across multiple scientific areas, CALS can address challenges and opportunities of the greatest relevance, here in New York, across the nation, and around the world.

Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) provides the educational outreach functions for Cornell University's role as New York State's Land Grant University. The Communications Team, like other units in Extension Administration, operates in a complex system of over 1,600 employees. Due to the broad nature of the communications function, it requires working closely with other CCE administrative units, such as Information Technology, Program Development, and Leadership Support.

Cornell communicators share a mission to enhance and preserve the university's brand and reputation as a top research institution and a leader in higher education, and to support and promote critical programs that serve the university's teaching, research, and public engagement mission. This position has a dotted line reporting structure to the CALS Assistant Dean of Communication and Marketing. This structure will provide additional guidance and support to the communicator while ensuring overall brand and strategic alignment.

What You Will Do

As the Web Community Support Specialist, you will play a major role in the team's communications operations across a wide spectrum of internal and external audiences to strengthen CCE's reputation among key stakeholders. You will collaborate with CCE Communications staff and the Cornell CALS Marketing and Communications Team to assist efforts in assembling, testing, documenting, and maintaining web-based programs and applications that extend the educational outreach of CCE. Specific duties include:

  • Ensuring content adheres to CCE messaging and brand guidelines.
  • Working with staff to migrate the content of 55+ websites to the new CCE public web platform.
  • Serving as point-of-contact for CCE web technical support, answering tickets, delegating questions as needed, and closing cases with a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Developing documentation, training modules, webinars, screencasts, and user manuals as part of training documentation for clients.
  • Ensuring that CCE web presences are available to the widest range of users possible, by evaluating content, incorporating web accessibility standards, and testing on a range of desktop and mobile devices.
  • Providing ongoing technical documentation describing how various systems operate and how they should be supported.
  • Participating as a key member in projects relevant to the CCE web presence, including any future redesign and reimplementation projects.

What We Need

We are looking for a talented individual who excels at building relationships with multiple stakeholders to assemble and support CCE Administration websites. We need someone who demonstrates and fosters high-level customer service to meet the needs of clientele.

Additionally, we need someone who has:

  • Bachelor's degree with 2+ years relevant experience, including specific experience in building websites and web pages within a CMS and technical support experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fluency in the use of Drupal or a comparable Content Management System (CMS) tool.
  • Understanding of how tags, categories, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) keywords, and other metadata are used to maximize reach and relevance of content.
  • Familiarity with web accessibility standards for written and visual content and application of styles.
  • Knowledge of how to balance conflicting priorities, make informed choices, and use sound judgment in completing urgent tasks.
  • Experience that demonstrates creativity, reasoning, and solution-finding techniques.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with clients who have a wide range of technical expertise, and information literacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with others on a collaborative team toward a shared project goal.
  • Proven ability to analyze requirements and meet deadlines.
  • Well-organized.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments in a proactive manner.
  • Commitment to a high level of customer service.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and well-being.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and well-being.

If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:

  • Knowledge of HTML/CSS.
  • CMS design/development experience.
  • Usability testing and experience.
  • Technical writing experience.
  • Graphic design and interface design experience.
  • Project management skills helpful.
  • Technical support experience.

This position is full-time (40 hours / week) and will be located in Ithaca, New York.

There is the opportunity to work remotely within New York State two days a week; an on-site presence in Ithaca is required three days a week.
