In our department we value science and education grounded in the natural history of organisms and strive to understand the patterns and processes that structure communities and ecosystems and drive evolutionary change over all geographical and time scales. As new methods provide insight into ecological and evolutionary mechanism and function, we seek to refine fundamental concepts, integrate findings into novel theory and address environmental challenges. As a department we are committed to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice and Belonging- values that underlie all we do. The Cornell Stable Isotope Laboratory (COIL) is a world class analytical facility housed in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The primary mission of COIL is to support Cornell researchers and students through sample preparation and analyses of stable light isotopes of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and hydrogen and the development of methodologies related to the analysis of stable isotopes. Secondly, we support sample analysis for external users from other academic institutions and government agencies such as the United States Geological Survey and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Working under general supervision, the primary responsibility will be preparing samples of soil, plant leaf, plant wood, and animal tissues for processing and analysis.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare samples using drying ovens, cryogenic grinders, freeze dryers, balances, and a preparation line for sample distillation.
  • Process samples using isotope ratio mass spectrometers, front-end peripherals, elemental and temperature conversion elemental analyzers, and a Gasbench.
  • Assist with basic laboratory and instrument maintenance and ordering supplies.
  • Maintain laboratory records and inventory.

This is a one-year, full time appointment with possibility of extension depending on funding.

  • Must be able to comfortably lift 20-50 lbs.
  • Must be willing to learn laboratory skills.
  • Ability to work alone on regular tasks based on a solid understanding of basic protocols and objectives of COIL.
  • Must be personable, flexible, proactive, and possess excellent organizational and communication skills and take pride in their work.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Visual concentration, attention to detail and manual dexterity are required.
  • Comfortable working alone as well as in a team environment to accomplish required tasks.
  • Must be able to perform highly repetitive work (i.e., sample processing) with a high degree of concentration and attention to detail.
  • Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
