Research Support Specialist II - Bacteriology (CVM)

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks a Research Support Specialist to join Dr. Guarino and the Bacteriology/Mycology laboratory at the Animal Health Diagnostic Center. The Research Support Specialist II (RSS) plays a crucial role in the laboratory, utilizing their expertise in molecular methods and veterinary diagnostics to enhance research and assay development. They are responsible for recommending improvements, collaborating on design and execution of processes, and supporting diagnostic testing performed within the Bacteriology/Mycology laboratory. This position requires a blend of technical skills, quality assurance knowledge, and the ability to work under general supervision while also contributing to team efforts.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Development of Diagnostic Assays: Active involvement in creating new diagnostic tests, including the entire process from conceptualization to practical implementation.
• Report and Publication Assistance: Support the writing and preparation of scientific papers and reports, which are essential for quality assurance and for sharing findings with the broader scientific community.
• Equipment Maintenance: Routine upkeep of sophisticated lab equipment is necessary to ensure accuracy and reliability of results.
• Diagnostic Testing: Conduct a wide array of microbiology tests, adhering to strict quality control measures and participate in proficiency testing programs to maintain high standards.
• BSL-3 Clearance: Obtain and maintain Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) clearance to ensure safe handling of potentially dangerous pathogens.

Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a biological science with an emphasis on molecular biology or microbiology, and a minimum of three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A strong understanding of molecular diagnostic methodologies, techniques, and instrumentation.
• Successful research and development work, including project management support.
• Experience adhering to established quality assurance processes.
• Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Biological Sciences or related field.
• Experience working in a veterinary diagnostics or molecular development laboratory.
• Working knowledge of Mycoplasma spp., techniques related to organism culture, speciation, and storage.
• Next-generation sequencing experience.
• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Important Details about the Position

• This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
• This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
• We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
• Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.

The Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is a high visibility and high-volume veterinary diagnostic laboratory that promotes the health, productivity, and welfare of food-and fiber-producing animals, companion animals, and zoo and wildlife populations. Through its comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services, the AHDC detects animal diseases and supports animal and public health, promotes environmental stewardship, and fosters economic growth.

The Bacteriology laboratory provides high quality, detailed, and complete diagnostic testing services to veterinary clients and agricultural producers, in addition to contributing to the education of undergraduate and graduate students.
