Department Background:

The CALS School of Integrative of Plant Science (SIPS) encompasses five fields: Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil and Crop Sciences. Combined there are 100+ faculty, 200 undergraduate majors, 200+ graduate students in six fields, and 600+ other employees located in Ithaca, Geneva, and other satellite locations across New York State. The School offers the multidisciplinary undergraduate major in the Plant Sciences and is also home to the Agricultural Sciences major. School faculty also contribute to the Biology, Global Development, and Viticulture & Enology majors.


Position Summary:

Explain summary of position responsibilities:

This is a part-time 35 hours per week/ 1- Year Term Position. That is responsible for assisting in research on evaluating potato lines and clones for resistance to potato cyst nematodes at a nematode quarantine facility.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Propagating and maintaining nematode cultures in growth rooms and chambers.
  • Conducting nematode bioassay tests.
  • Collecting plant tissue samples and extracting DNA from them.
  • Processing soil samples originating from tested plants and soil surveys.
  • Planting potatoes and watering and caring for potato plants (which requires weekend work) during the bioassay cycle.

Other duties include:

  • Performing sterilization techniques and properly disposing of soil and plant materials.
  • Routinely cleaning the lab and plant growth spaces, washing glassware and other materials,
  • Regularly monitoring the function of the waste treatment system in the basement.
  • Monitoring conditions in the growth chamber and growth rooms, and conducting basic data entry.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.
  • Specify minimum education and experience equivalency.
  • High school Diploma and up to 1 year relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Must have the knowledge of federal quarantine procedures as well as the working experience with quarantine nematodes and growing and caring for potato plants in a controlled environment.
  • Must be very reliable, responsible, flexible, capable of lifting 20-50 lbs.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Adhere to all disease control and laboratory safety protocols.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree.
  • Relevant lab work experience of up to 1 year is desirable.
