Medical Technologist I - Molecular Diagnostics (CVM)

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Medical Technologist to join the Molecular Diagnostics team. The Medical Technologist I employs a strong theoretical and functional knowledge of molecular techniques and technology to perform testing that aids in the diagnosis of viral and bacterial infections and provides genetic analysis in support of animal health. This role adheres to the standards set forth by AAVLD and ISO 17025, as well as the organizational quality management system's policies and procedures.


The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform a comprehensive range of highly sensitive veterinary molecular diagnostic tests, including conventional, real-time, and quantitative PCR methods.
  • Extract and analyze DNA or RNA from a wide variety of sample types, quickly and accurately.
  • Evaluate, record, interpret, and report results per protocol, escalating as appropriate to unit management for review.
  • Troubleshoot test, process, or control issues as they arise, collaborating with unit management as needed.
  • Perform general laboratory organization, and maintenance of supplies, reagents, controls, and equipment.

Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in molecular biology, microbiology, or related field, with up to two years' experience performing molecular testing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and a working understanding of real-time PCR, sequencing, and recombinant methods.
  • Must be able to work within a biological safety cabinet while using a range of manual and automated pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • Proficient with basic computer skills, with the ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to identify and troubleshoot problems with results, processes, and instrumentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and an ability to perform laboratory procedures with accuracy, precision, and efficiency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an environment with an established quality management system.
  • Experience using a liquid handling robotic system.
  • Successful work experience in a fast-paced, complex, client-oriented environment.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

This position is 39 hours per week. While normal business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, specific schedules may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, University holidays and scheduled breaks.

Who We Are:

The Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is a high visibility and high-volume veterinary diagnostic laboratory that promotes the health, productivity, and welfare of food-and fiber-producing animals, companion animals, and zoo and wildlife populations. Through its comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services, the AHDC detects animal diseases and supports animal and public health, promotes environmental stewardship, and fosters economic growth.


The Molecular Diagnostic (MD) unit determines the pathogenic or genetic status of submitted samples using molecular techniques. The unit offers over 80 PCR-based tests appropriate for a wide variety of species and sample types. The unit also NAHLN testing and surveillance support for the Northeast as well as some Southern states, and operates in compliance with both AAVLD and ISO 17025 standards.
