Upper Peninsula Power Company UPPCO Substation Engineer in Ishpeming, Michigan

UPPCO seeks a *Substation Engineer *to join their team in your choice of *Ishpeming or Houghton, Michigan. *Whether you're just starting your engineering career or you're a seasoned professional, we have an exciting opportunity for you.

As a Substation Engineer, you'll be an integral part of our Substation and Generation Design Team. Your work will encompass everything from engineering and design to procurement and project development for capital projects. You'll provide vital technical support for the design, testing, and commissioning of protective relay systems, control systems, and SCADA systems used in our electrical substations and generating plants. You'll also collaborate closely with field crews to troubleshoot and resolve issues, ensuring the reliable operation of our infrastructure.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.

  • Engineering & Design. Contribute to the creation, maintenance, and verification of electrical drawings and designs for utility substations and generating facilities.
  • Field Support. Assist with the testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of relay and control systems.
  • Project Management. Help monitor and manage projects to ensure they stay on track and within scope.
  • *Cross-Department Collaboration. *Work with various teams across the company to answer questions and provide expert advice on substation systems and components.
  • Compliance & Safety. Advocate for best practices in engineering, ensuring all work meets safety and regulatory standards.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Power, Technology, Electronics, or Instrumentation required. Preference given to those with coursework in power systems and power engineering.
  • 2 or more years' experience in electric utility engineering relative to substation systems, power systems, and/or SCADA engineering is preferred.
  • Michigan Licensed Professional Engineer, a bonus.
  • Expertise in project management and a track record of technical leadership is preferred.
  • Proficiency in CAD software is required.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to safety and compliance required.

  • Strong relational and communication skills required.
  • Ability to manage a diverse workload and prioritize tasks.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel amongst the Upper Peninsula to various UPPCO locations.
