Abbott House Family Therapist - BSFT in Irvington, New York

Job description

The BSFT therapist will provide Brief Strategic Family Therapy, a trauma sensitive, strength based, culturally competent and evidenced based practice that is effective in improving family communication, reducing alcohol use in parents, and in reducing adolescents' substance use in families where parents are using drugs at baseline. BSFT is also effective in decreasing alcohol use among parents by improving family functioning. BSFT therapists work with children aged 6-18 years while working with the family to restructure problematic family interactions. The goal is to improve the youth’s behavior problems by improving the circumstances that are directly related to the child’s symptoms. Therapist will help families develop the skills and resources needed to strengthen the family unit and prevent out of home and/or entry/re-entry into foster care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides home-based clinical services utilizing Brief Strategic Family Therapy, a short-term, problem-oriented intervention.

  • Typically, therapist will provide an average length of treatment of 12-15 sessions, lasting 60-90 minutes. For more severe cases the average length of treatment may be doubled, lasting up to 24 weeks.

  • Therapist will be assigned a maximum caseload of 12 families.

  • Assess and monitor safety, imminent risk and well-being of children.

  • Ability to engage families and work collaboratively to establish service goals/treatment plans.

  • Assist families in developing the skills necessary to remain together and provide for the safety of children and all members of the family.

  • Participate in training and consultation to obtain Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) certification.

  • Experience in providing both individual and family therapy.

  • Experience working in direct service with youth and family.

  • Completion of all documentation in a timely manner.

  • Comply with daily documentation and assessment requirements.

  • Attend training opportunities to enhance clinical skills and professional development.

  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including evening and weekends to accommodate the families. schedule, available for on-call emergencies and support.

  • Any other related duties as required.

  • You have at least a Master's in social work or Master's in mental health or marriage and family therapy, or a related field

  • You have excellent writing and communication skills.

  • You must be computer literate.
