About the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR):

The Indiana Department of Revenue team has over 700 staff members from 13 locations across Indiana. We work collaboratively with the Indiana Governor's office, the General Assembly, state agencies, individuals, business owners, corporations, tax practitioners, and tax program participants to administer Indiana's tax laws. DOR administers over 65 tax types and annually processes nearly $21 billion of tax revenue. Our mission is to serve Indiana by administering tax laws fairly, securely, and efficiently.

Salary:

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $47,320. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Role Overview:

The Revenue Tax Specialist in Customer Service assists Tax Practitioner customers with sensitive situations by researching and resolving complex tax issues that can include multiple tax types, accounts, and stakeholders on matters that may include any tax type administered by DOR.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working on the phone and managing email communications for a substantial part of their day.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Provide professional oral communication to tax practitioners for approximately 85% of the day.

  • Provide professional written communication responses to tax practitioners approximately 15% of the day.

  • Provide technical and procedural assistance to taxpayers, taxpayer practitioners, other divisions within the agency, and other state agencies.

  • Review accounts and properly apply payments to taxpayer accounts as needed.

  • Conduct extensive research to resolve complex issues related to payments and/or returns for taxpayers, including research in DOR’s software and database applications for unpaid/unfiled tax liabilities.

  • Review and determine eligibility for penalty abatement requests

  • Adhere to strict guidelines for personal and confidential information as outlined by the Internal Revenue Service

  • Understand best practices of other departments in the agency to provide adequate support and help resolve issues

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Experience in accounting, tax collection, finance, or customer service.

  • Ability to discuss and settle technical tax matters tactfully and responsively with taxpayers and tax practitioners using customer service skills for problem resolution.

  • Ability to conduct research on tax problems using various legal resources and make appropriate corrections if necessary

  • Ability to apply principles from training and procedures to provide “Best in Class” service to our customers

  • Ability to understand various taxpayer accounting and auditing systems.

  • Ability to apply and understand ethics and confidentiality laws.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
