Amergis Instructional Aid in Indianapolis, Indiana

The School Aide is an individual who works with students requiring instructional, personal care and/or behavioral assistance under the supervision of the special education department and/or supervising designee.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follow through with IEP objectives including math, reading, speech, independent skills, and managing behavioral deficits and excesses, one on one or as a general classroom aide

  • Facilitate teacher directed learning activities including lesson plans, worksheets, reinforcement systems, small groups, social games, and work assistance

  • Assist students when included into general education classes

  • Communicate pertinent information to teachers

  • Accompany students during recess and lunch periods, along with community experiences

  • Strictly adhere to confidentiality requirements regarding all matters pertaining to students, parents, parent communications, and/or classroom activities. (Note: Unless instructed otherwise by supervising teacher, all parent communication is the responsibility of certified personnel)

  • Assist with activities of prescribed programs including those written by related service personnel such as PT, OT and SLP

  • Assist students in the development of independent skills through self-care activities such as toileting, clothing routines and personal hygiene

  • Provides personal care assistance with health care tasks, personal hygiene services, feeding and other related support services essential to the client’s health

  • May be asked to assist in behavior management techniques at the direction of the teacher and/or other school professional (i.e. BCBA, Psychologist, etc.)

  • Assist teacher with clerical duties including making stimuli, making copies, maintaining a clean and organized classroom, preparing materials, and assignment scoring

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have experience working in a high school classroom

  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice

  • Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable

  • Current CPR if applicable

  • TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable

  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)

  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements

  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site

  • Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements

  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language may be required

  • Computer proficiency required

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
