The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is hiring entry-level and experienced attorneys to serve as Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys. The Prosecutor’s Office seeks attorneys who are dedicated to public service, public safety, and fairness and justice for all who come into contact with the child support system.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office Child Support Division works to encourage non-custodial parents to take financial responsibility for the benefit of their children. A wide range of services are available for families, including paternity establishment, locating non-custodial parents, and modification and enforcement of child support orders. The Prosecutor’s Office does not represent either party in a child support case or favor one side over the other. Our goal is to seek a just and fair outcome.

Deputy Prosecutors carry a diverse caseload and appear on behalf of the State of Indiana in all Marion County Title IV-D proceedings. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is seeking a well-qualified candidate whose diverse background reflects an ability to serve the community and pursue a fair and equitable child support system. Applicants must be admitted to the Indiana State Bar or have passed the bar examination and be awaiting admission to the bar.

Position Responsibilities

Managing a caseload of approximately 6,500 cases, covering the full range of establishment, modification, and enforcement functions.

Coordinating with paralegals and staff to provide support services as needed for cases within the assigned case load.

Addressing legal questions from staff, participants, other agencies, and attorneys with respect to the cases in the case load and child support issues generally.

Representing the State of Indiana in Title IV-D proceedings in the Circuit and Superior courts in Indiana, including preparing cases for court, managing the workflow during the court session, and follow-up responsibilities after the session has concluded.

Responding to phone, email, fax, and letter inquiries from case participants, attorneys, and other agencies regarding cases in the assigned case load.

Mastering the application of the Indiana Child Support Guidelines to fairly and accurately determine appropriate recommended child support orders.

Mastering the statewide child support computer system and other applications needed to fully perform establishment, modification, and enforcement functions.

Participating in various community events or meetings to meet and educate the public on the role of the Child Support Division of the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and address individual questions or concerns when possible.

Mastering important related subjects, including administrative law, bankruptcy, liens, probate, contract, forfeiture, and interstate laws to ensure appropriate actions are taken as needed.

Drafting special pleadings and documents in Word as needed.

Developing and maintaining collegial and effective relationships with all staff, courts, private attorneys, public defenders, and other agencies; honoring the Commitment to Civility as outlined in the Marion County local rules.

Ensure that all work is completed in strict compliance with all applicable federal and state regulatory rules, laws and guidelines, including IRS Publication 1075.

The training for this position maybe in-person, remote or a combination of both.

Follow the Marion County Prosecutor’s personnel policies, particularly with regard to confidentiality, sexual harassment, and usage of information technology resources.

Complete work assignments and communicate with participants and attorneys in a timely, accurate, and efficient manner.

Attend trainings as directed.

Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

J.D. Degree from an accredited law school and a member of good standing of the Indiana bar (or have a pending application);

Demonstrated commitment to public service and a strong academic record;

Academic coursework or related work experience demonstrating a sincere interest in family law and child support;

Commitment for fairness and capacity for a strong work ethic, ability to manage a highly demanding workload, and sound problem-solving and decision-making skills; and

Prior work experience in family law, in the form of a clerkship, paid employment, or internship, is preferred but not required.

Applicant must also be admitted to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana or secure admission within 60 days of accepting the position.

Applicant must be a resident of Marion County at time of hire or willing to relocate to Marion County within six (6) months from the date the position is accepted.

Applicant must make a one year commitment to the position.
