POSITION SUMMARY

The maintenance mechanic repairs and maintains, in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, and manufacturer’s specifications, machinery and mechanical equipment, using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring and testing instruments. The Maintenance Mechanic is expected to be a multi skilled in the areas of Industrial Maintenance including but not limited to; Pump repair, Welding, basic Electricity and pipefitting. As a function of this position, the Maintenance Mechanic may be involved with the generation, collection, storage, and preparation of shipments of hazardous waste. Specific expertise in pump maintenance and alignment using precision tools desired.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs mechanic skills including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, pneumatic and hydraulic troubleshooting and repair of plant wide equipment.

  • Conducting and documenting as required, inspections on safety equipment, process equipment, and forklifts.

  • Obtaining safe work permits as required for maintenance or project work.

  • Managing workload to meet established deadlines and Standard Operating Procedure requirements.

  • Recommending new, or changes to existing Preventive Maintenance Work Orders, to improve equipment up time.

  • Maintaining work areas to acceptable standards of housekeeping and sanitation.

  • Effectively interacting with other employees in a team environment.

  • Effectively communicating with outside contractors and vendors as required.

  • Prepares reports documenting work performed and damaged, worn, or broken parts.

  • Cleans, organizes, and otherwise maintains housekeeping in shop areas, parts stores and tool locations.

  • Collaborates with plant personnel to accomplish proper Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) of equipment/machinery & line breaks.

  • Makes necessary modifications and implements confers with product manager regarding test results and makes additional alterations to machinery as required.

  • Assembling, installing, and maintaining mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment.

  • Troubleshooting machinery and performing routine preventative maintenance, including visual and sound inspections.

  • Inspecting equipment for potential and actual hazards, wear, leaks, and other conditions requiring maintenance or shut down.

  • Installs replacement parts for machines.

  • Identifies/corrects the causes of unexpected breakdowns & repairs broken machinery quickly and efficiently.

  • Reading, interpreting, and following instructions and operation manuals.

  • Cleaning, repairing, and installing equipment and parts as needed.

  • Operating a variety of hand and power tools.

  • Complying with health and safety regulations.

  • Performing general maintenance work on buildings as assigned.

  • Performs preventive/corrective maintenance inspections & service on production equipment/machinery such as (not limited to) piping, pipe fitting, welding, valves (manual & actuated), steam traps, heat exchangers, pumps (various types), motors (electrical), conveyors, & compressed air systems.

  • Available after-hours call-in’s as needed.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Desired Background

  • High School education.

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in a mechanical related field is required

Knowledge, Skills & Talents

  • Must also have 3-5 years of applicable maintenance experience in a manufacturing process plant

Maintenance Mechanic / Fabricator Skill Requirements

Pipe Fitting:

  • Pipe fitting and piping identification. Must be able to identify the proper piping size, materials, fittings and connections.

  • Must show ability to put together a piping assembly, properly, by reading a drawing / schematic of what is required. Must use the proper pipe size, fittings and fitting materials to complete the drawn assembly.

  • Must show proper operation and use of the pipe threading machine.

Steam Traps:

  • Must be able to identify a steam trap.

  • Must have knowledge of the workings of a steam trap

  • Must know where steam traps would be used?

  • Must be able to explain how a steam trap works – different kinds.

  • Must understand the different weaknesses of different traps.

Valves:

  • Must be able to identify valves – be able to tell the difference between valves

  • Must be able to tell where a valve would be used and why they are used in a specific location

  • Must be able to identify the differences between a GATE, GLOBE, BALL and CHECK Valves

  • Must be able to identify actuated valves

Welding:

  • Must be able to setup the welder for operation and prepare material for welding

  • Must choose the proper electrode for the specific materials being welded

  • Must demonstrate welding abilities (Stick and wire feed operations and Position and Structural/Fabrication Welding)

  • Must be able to bend copper tubing and sweat-solder copper piping joints

Pumps:

  • Must have knowledge of how Centrifugal, Metering, Positive Displacement (AODD), and Vacuum Pumps operate.

  • Must understand the steps for removing a pump from service in the field

  • Must understand the steps for reinstalling a pump from service in the field

  • Must demonstrate the ability to swap out a pump, unassisted

  • Must understand the various components of a pump

  • Must be able to open-up a pump

  • Must be able to replace a seal cartridge

  • Must be able to set-gap on a centrifugal pump impeller

  • Must understand the means of vacuum pump operation

  • Must understand the use of vacuum pumps

  • Must be able to align a pump to rough-alignment by straight-edge

  • Must be able to use a laser-alignment tool to finish aligning a pump

Hand and Power Tools:

  • Must show knowledge, and demonstrate competency in the use of Hand and Power Tools

  • Must be able to operate a fork truck (after formal training) in a safe manner

  • Must be able to operate a scissors lift (after formal training) in a safe manner

  • Must be able to operate an articulating lift (after formal training) in a safe manner

Heat Exchangers:

  • Must have knowledge of the working operation of plate and frame heat exchangers

  • Must understand the steps and specific information required to open / replace a plate and frame heat exchanger

  • Must have knowledge of the working operation of shell and tube heat exchangers

  • Must understand the steps and specific information required to open a shell and tube heat exchanger

Packaging / Filling Equipment:

Must have knowledge of filling equipment including knowledge of:

  • Conveyor systems

  • Palletizer Robots

  • Stretch-wrappers

Computer Skills:

  • Must have basic computer skills

  • Must be capable of navigating through and utilizing a Maintenance-based Work Order Program

Physical Capabilities / Safety:

  • Must not have any in-Vantage Safety or Disciplinary Violations in the last 12 months

  • Must be able to wear a harness and work at heights safely (Lifts, scaffolding, high catwalks)

  • Must follow all safety rules at the plant

  • Must be able to climb stairs

  • Must be able to traffic slippery walking conditions

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs, safely

  • Must be able to pass a medical respirator fit-test for respirator / fresh-air use

  • Must be able to work inside and outside in hot and cold weather environments
