Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an individual contributor as a Waste Characterization Specialist to work at MFC. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our MFC facility with every Friday off.

MFC includes more than a dozen nuclear facilities and almost as many radiological facilities. This position will support various facilities at MFC to help identify, characterize, and coordinate waste management activities within MFC.

Responsibilities Include:

You will manage the following mission-critical activities:

  • Radioactive material program development, improvement, and tracking.

  • Waste management process including characterization support.

  • Implement environmental and associated radiological requirements to ensure compliance with Department of Energy Orders, Federal and State regulations, and various standards (i.e., ANSI, ISO 14001, NESHAP and Department of Energy Directives, Guides, and Handbooks).

  • Develop and implement environmental policies to ensure INL work scope is compliant. This includes development of highly complex regulatory interpretations and resolution of potential or actual compliance issues, with legal representatives. Also, may include development of permits; collection of samples; and gather data, calculating/modeling, and coordinating with other site contractors for the site-wide reporting to stakeholders and regulatory authorities.

  • Maintain expertise of all existing regulations in assigned area of technical competence and actively monitor for proposed changes in federal, state, and local environmental regulations which may include RCRA, CERCLA, NEPA, EPCRA, FIFRA, CAA, CWA, NHPA, SDWA, UST, TSCA, drinking water cross-connection, and radioactive waste management.

  • Present to and partner with Federal and State regulators and ISO-14001 auditors for all environmental inspections and respond to identified areas of concerns and non-compliances.

  • Conduct operations program activities including procedure development, contractor assurance activities, and potential readiness reviews.

    o Project planning and budget management.

    o Plan, schedule, and lead assessments.

    o Risk management and mitigation.

    o Maintain knowledge of programs, facilities, systems in assigned areas.

    o Demonstrate strategic understanding of the organization.

    o You may be requested to build depth and qualify in critical roles such as Nuclear Facility Manager, Shift Supervisor, Material Balance Area Custodian, or Criticality Safety Officer.

*Minimum Requirements: *

  • Minimum Qualifications:* Bachelor’s Degree and 5-9 years relevant experience, OR Masters degree and 2-6 years relevant experience, Doctorate and 2-4 years relevant experience; OR 11-15 years relevant experience and actively pursuing a degree. *

  • Experience in nuclear research and development, nuclear or radiological facility operations or management, or reactor plant operations or management in Department of Energy, NRC, university, or similar settings.

  • Must have strong background in mathematical calculations/ complex data sets.

  • Willingness to track valuable and high consequence items.

  • Will obtain and maintain a Radiological Worker I or II qualification.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Degrees in engineering, mathematics, or science related fields. Relevant experience includes non-destructive assay (NDA) dose to curie methods (DTC) environmental simulation modeling, radiochemistry, nuclear criticality safety, mathematics, nuclear physics, or chemistry.

  • Progressive operations or research experience including knowledge of associated regulations and waste management challenges.

  • Strong technical knowledge of radioactive waste management, treatment, and disposition requirements, TRU Program requirements, RCRA, HazWoper, project management and project control activities.

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($91,008 - $186,588) / Level 4 ($109,260 - $223,908). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
