GENERAL SUMMARY
The Controller is a key member of the agency’s leadership team with responsibilities for maintaining and continuously improving the systems of financial controls, general accounting, tax and regulatory compliance, budgeting and financial planning, banking and cash management, payroll, and internal and external reporting. As leader, this role provides critical support to the CFO and other members of the senior team within a dynamic organization. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS*
Internal controls
Designs and/or monitors internal controls that are implemented to protect agency assets and compliance.
Develops and/or revises financial policies and procedures that ensure agency safety and soundness while supporting operational efficiencies.
Performs and/or reviews account reconciliations to support monthly, quarterly and annual accounting.
Audit and external reporting and compliance
Leads annual financial statement audits for the agency, affiliates and pension plan.
Gathers and supplies information/documentation to external auditors and regulators to support timely and quality audits.
Manages and/or oversees all tax and compliance reporting including Form 990, UFR, HUD, and debt and bond issuances, etc.
Accounting, budgeting and internal reporting
Maintains, reviews and updates general ledger chart of accounts in support of agency accounting and reporting needs, including restricted funding and other business requirements.
Leads initiatives to improve efficiencies and timeliness of accounting and reporting through use of technology, including subledgers, banking platforms, and other systems.
Leads and manages annual agency budgets. Meets with department leaders and stakeholders, prepares budget schedules, and guides budgets in support of institutional strategic planning.
Manages monthly financial closing with focus on accuracy and timeliness.
Supports effective financial management and reporting by analyzing monthly financial results, researching expected vs. actual results (revenue expenses and balance sheet), making recommendations for corrective actions as needed, and developing reforecasts of projects financial results.
Oversees completion and distribution of monthly performance metrics and dashboards to Program, Development and Social Enterprise teams to support their business operations. Meets with stakeholders as needed to drive business efficiencies and informed decision-making.
Supports CFO and other stakeholders to design and run financial reports needed to inform business decisions.
Management and operations
Possesses professional and technical knowledge of matters including state and federal contracts, accounting and reporting, and tax and compliance.
Develop and deliver internal training to stakeholders within Programs, Development, and Social Enterprises to support their business needs as well as timely and quality accounting and reporting.
Manages and leads Finance team members through regular training, coaching, and mentoring.
Delegates tasks to team members and monitors performance.
Ensures Finance team members are knowledgeable and equipped to execute their roles and deliver against quality and timeline expectations.
Evaluates staffing for ability to meet business and compliance needs.
Maintains updated job descriptions and documentation of job tasks to support efficient transitions resulting from changes in staffing.

PREPARATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Bachelor’s degree in business or accounting required, CPA desired.
Minimum of five years’ experience working in an accounting capacity (nonprofit experience preferred).
Experience with Blackbaud or similar financial systems valuable.
Strong knowledge of Excel.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing demands.
