Educational and Experience Requirement:

Bachelors degree in related field. Masters degree preferred. Two years of experience in Higher Education, Academic Advising, Counseling, Admissions, or experience in a related field. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature and Purpose of Position:

Serves as academic advisor to College of Education Graduate students, provides prescriptive advising services, including course selection, registration overrides, degree requirements, academic policies, and program planning. Assists students in understanding their academic options and making informed decisions aligned with their career goals. Tracks admissions and enrollment data to help the College of Education bridge the gap between Graduate Admissions and Student Registration.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Graduate Advisor within the College of Education will serve a pivotal role in guiding and supporting graduate students through their academic journey. Provides comprehensive prescriptive advising services to graduate students enrolled in various programs within the College of Education. This role serves as a mentor, advocate, and resource to ensure students successfully navigate their academic, professional, and personal development. Maintains and updates reports in Degree Works by consistently entering advising notes after meeting with Students. Guides and directs students to academic and other support resources. Aids students in understanding retention, progression, and remediation policies and processes. Analyzes and initiates any necessary modifications to student degree plans (IE: Course Substitutions, Change of Admission Decision Forms to add or remove graduate certificates, etc.). Monitors student progress towards degree completion, identifies potential barriers to success, and implements strategies to support student retention and timely graduation. Conducts regular check-ins with students to assess their academic performance and overall well-being.

Tracks enrollment and retention data and routinely reports data to the Departments within the COE. Inputs registration overrides to permit student registration. Continuously improves the advising role and related processes within the College of Education. Leads collaborative efforts among COE faculty and staff to support and improve enrollment and retention efforts. Routinely sends registration reminders to continuing students. Positively engages with students for their success and wellness. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications:

Knowledge of university infrastructure, policies and procedures. Knowledge of office systems. Must have the ability to solve operational problems and make suggestions for process improvement. Must have independent judgement and be confident in providing completed staff work to supervisors. Must stay abreast of trends, best practices, and developments in higher education, advising, and student support services. Must participate in professional development opportunities, conferences, and workshops to enhance advising skills and knowledge.
