Responsibilities:
The Systems Engineer supports the Space Launch Systems (SLS) Program, Systems Engineering and Integration Organization (SEIO), Launch Integration and Mission Operations (LIMO) Office for the SLS Program. This position will perform engineering and liaison functions, providing an interface between the LIMO Office and other SLS, NASA, and Contractor organizations, for requirements, verification and validation, drawings and schematics, specifications, ground operations procedures, and technical issues. The focus tasks for this include the development, planning, and execution of the Integrated Test and Checkout (ITCO) of the SLS Launch Vehicle during assembly, integration, testing, and preparations for launch.
The Systems Engineer will:
• Provide systems engineering and interface integration support to the MSFC Systems Requirements, Verification & Validation Branch, for Space Launch System (SLS) Integrated Launch Vehicle testing.
• Support performed includes, but is not limited to interface design definition, requirements development, and verification planning.
• Perform technical analysis of processing requirements, such as OMRS, WADs, and associated ground hardware for nominal and off-nominal integrated operations from manufacturing, transportation, off-line and integrated ground processing, stacking, integrated test and checkout (ITCO), and launch. Coordinate with ground systems and Orion personnel to identify and define ground operations processing requirements.
• Coordinate and interface with MSFC Customer, LIMO, and SLS project teams as well as participating in reviews, meetings (i.e., team/discipline, TIMs, teleconferences, etc.), working groups, and trade studies.
• Prepare for and provide console staffing for Integrated Test execution.
• Identify and communicate risks associated with interface requirements via the NASA Risk Management System.
Some travel to other NASA Centers and customer locations will be required (nominally 0 to 30%, depending on project requirements and integration testing activity.)
Personnel is required to be self-motivated, effective team players familiar with working in a dynamic work environment who are willing to assume a Systems Integration role in this SLS systems design and definition effort.
Degree in Engineering or related field is required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. A BS with at least 10 years of aerospace industry experience is required.
Requirements:
Experience with Systems Engineering as a discipline, to include the development of requirements, requirement allocation, and development of verification plans, verification objectives, verification matrices, and verification implementation.
• Experience in the development, integration, and implementation of complex aerospace/space systems.
• Experience reading and working with engineering drawings, interface control documents, configuration documents, or other technical documentation.
• Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills are required.
• Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook)
Evidence of the following experience will be used to identify suitable candidates for this position:
• Experience in requirements, plans, and procedures development and experience in the execution of ground operations for spacecraft or launch vehicle flight hardware and systems.
• Experience in requirements, plans, and procedures development and experience in the execution of testing operations for spacecraft or launch vehicle flight hardware and systems.
• An understanding of launch vehicle systems definition, functional requirement development, and/or design integration.
• Experience with NASA and/or MSFC spacecraft or launch vehicle development, processing, ground operations, and ground support equipment.
• Personnel with an understanding of the NASA systems engineering policies and procedures and familiarity with the SLS Program have preference.
Essential Functions
Work Environment
Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%)
Physical Requirements
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
