Overview:

This position will directly support International Space Station (ISS) as well as all future exploration missions relating to Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS). This position encompasses duties and responsibilities for maintaining life support systems aboard the ISS, discovering methodologies for making existing ISS ECLSS more efficient, and for troubleshooting and correcting anomalous phenomena aboard the ISS. Support includes m echanical design and modeling of specialized test articles, test stands, and test support equipment with respect to fluid and thermal components.

Job responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a team of engineers, chemists, and technicians providing support to NASA while maintaining a strong consciousness about safety.

  • Provide technical mechanical engineering expertise to assist and support the research and development of water recovery efforts for ISS and advanced exploration initiatives.

  • General electro and mechanical knowledge as well as knowledge of fluid transport and thermal systems is highly sought after.

  • Support writing test protocols, conduction of tests, test stand build-ups, and interpretation and reporting of test results.

  • Work with project level and flight system engineers as they define their operational requirements, system performance, configuration, component selection, safety, and quality before and during the testing phases.

Qualifications:

Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or other related engineering field is required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirement is a BS with 0-5 years of experience.

Required Skills:

  • Applicable experience directly related to Aerospace testing and/or test data collection and analysis.

  • Knowledge of thermal\fluid components, systems, and associated instrumentation.

  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems.

  • Experience with the build-up and disassembly of test stands.

  • Experience with development of test procedures.

  • Experience in interpretation of post experimental test data.

  • Experience in sourcing instrumentation and test stand components.

  • Schedule and coordinate machine shop schedule for parts (scrum).

  • Experience with Systems Engineering requirements, risk developments, and trade study developments.

  • Experience with some statistics/graphing software (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

  • Ability to review documents and manuscripts.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with Labview

  • 3D print knowledge

  • CAD knowledge

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office and Laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<10%)

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
