What does this role look like?
Join Lockheed Martin’s Communications leadership team, with a focus on developing and executing external communications strategies for the strategic and missile defense line of business within the company’s Space division. This leader will sit in Huntsville, Alabama, and be responsible for spearheading global and Huntsville-area external communications, advising subject matter experts on messaging, creating campaigns, conducting media relations, supporting thought leadership, and measuring and reporting results. They will oversee communications for a business portfolio focused on our efforts to help defend against modern-day missile threats through leveraging disruptive technology, to keep us all safe.
Reporting to the senior manager of communications, the successful candidate will work with business leaders to understand business objectives and creatively craft communications strategies to achieve those goals.
*Primary responsibilities: *
• Create and execute a communications plan, including promotional events and thought leadership, to support the missile defense line of business and Huntsville area
• Develop and lead PR practitioners across the team, developing talent and supporting their career growth
• Manage media relations by building and maintaining relationships with key journalists, and pitching story ideas on technology and portfolio programs.
• Collaborate with internal business partners and communications colleagues to create integrated plans focused on media relations, social/digital and marketing workstreams.
• Prepare spokespeople for interviews, drafting background materials and more.
• Support video projects including scripts, plus overseeing creation of images, graphics, etc.
• Serve as an internal reporter by investigating, sourcing, developing, and packaging stories for external target audiences (earned and owned content)
• Build and maintain relationships with U.S. Department of Defense public affairs officers.
• Provide insightful, informed and strategic communications counsel to business leaders.
• Manage multiple workstreams and projects simultaneously, support corporate-wide initiatives.
Although this position does support some teleworking; the preferred candidate will be located near our Lockheed Martin Space facility in Rocket City USA, one of the greatest places to work: Huntsville, AL , and be expected to work in the office as needed
Basic Qualifications:
To be effective, you will need to possess these basic qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or advanced degree in journalism, public relations, communications, marketing, or related field (advertising, etc.)
• Understanding of contemporary communications and industry trends
• Ability to convey highly complex information in clear, compelling ways
• Previous experience with communications measurement techniques
• Previous experience with AP style, demonstrating exceptional writing, editing and oral communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work on many projects simultaneously and with close attention to detail
• You will need to be a US Citizen, andbe able to obtain and maintain a US DoD SECRET clearance, to support this government contract, as well as successfully pass a drug and background check, in order to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

• Prior public affairs experience and/or familiarity with DoD public affairs.
• Proven ability to cultivate and maintain effective working relationships.
• Strong communications planning and project management experience.
• Excellent writing skills geared towards external audiences.
• Media relations experience is a must.
• Track news, social and digital metrics and analysis and use results to inform future communications strategies and activities.
• Comfortable working as part of a fast-paced matrixed team.
• Crisis communications experience.
• Quick study with an attention to detail and a sense of urgency.
• Excellent prioritization and time management skills.
• Strong work ethic and positive attitude.
• Motivated self-starter who performs without appreciable direction and works effectively under competing priorities and tight deadlines.
• Results-driven with an ability to develop and execute communications strategies to achieve desired outcomes.
• Possess effective relationship-building skills with peers, leadership and external stakeholders including influencers.

Ability to Work Remotely: Part-time Remote Telework: The employee selected for this position will work part of their work schedule remotely and part of their work schedule at a designated Lockheed Martin facility. The specific weekly schedule will be discussed during the hiring process.
Work Schedules: Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits.
Schedule for this Position: 9x80 every other Friday off
